I don't know whether it's a coincidence but the above seems to be the case. I've carried out all of the usual checks such as clearing temporary internet files, sran pybot, adaware and c/cleaner. The message at the bottom of the black screen when starting up is:

CLIENT MAC ADDR: OO OF EA17 CE 60 GUID (a series of F's) DHC (P) if that means anything.

Its your PC taking its time to get an IP from the router via DHCP.

Also do a start---run---msconfig, go to the startup tab and look for any programs that shouldn't be running.

Software like Mcafee etc are slow on startups also.

You could set a fixed IP as well and turn off the DHCP server.

Although the problem shouldn't be happening in the first place either I would think.

    To set it manually
Go to broadband providers support/settings site and take down DNS addresses.
Go into your router config disable DHCP server- take note of it's IP.
Go into network connections in XP control panel and into TCP properties of your ethernet connection.

    Fill in details manually e.g.
IP Address: 192.168.1.2 - Your PC
    Subnet Mask: 255.255.255.0
Gateway: 192.168.1.1 - Your routers IP

    DNS Servers
    Primary: 213.94.190.194 - Eircoms
    Secondary: 213.94.190.236 - Eircoms

That's it see if it makes any difference at boot time.

Might be trying to boot off the network, check your boot sequence in the bios.

Yeah this happens a lot on my desktop which is running winXP pro.
The static IP sorted this out.

As DonkeyStyle said above... this has nothing to do with windows but it is to do with the boot sequence. Spyware, start up programs, memory and all the rest have nothing to do with this whatsoever, as at the stage this message comes up it is the BIOS that is the player here, windows has not even began loading yet.

What firewall software are you running at startup?
