Just thought some of you may be interested in this website which shows the bitrate for each channel on Sky. No suprise that the ITV rate is so low, but for the RTE knockers RTE 2 is one of the highest!:)

RTE having a "massive" 5 channels and 4 radio stations as opposed to 6 to 10 channels on their transponder is one of the main reasons their rate is relatively high.

ITVs data streams also eat away at the available bitrate, whereas RTE have teletext (256K-ish I think) on 4 of the 5 channels on their transponder, and no seperate subtitle or data streams.

It's obvious watching the World Cup that RTE 2 has the best picture. ITV is practically unwatchable.

Only DW these days. TV5 and TVEi moved to other uplinks a while back, TVEi first then TV5.

isnt that recommended though? ITV put too many channels onto their transponders

Ah RTE is the best for the world cup picture.
I switched to ITV the other day and it was really sh1t, and the fact that Im using an LCD makes it more noticable.

It is, thats why I had the "" around massive. RTE have one of the lowest loadings on a transponder on the entire constellation.

Well 544 x 576 will look terribel on an LCD anyway. RTE & BBC use 720 x 576.

In theory about 7 channels should be still good , or 8 maybe. Nearly twice this if you use MPEG4 for ordinary definition. 3 or 4 HD Channels in MPEG4. In MPEG2 ONE HD channel needs a whole transponder!
