When I ordered a guitar from MusicYo in Tennesse, it came three days later, then a month or so later, i got a bill from FedEx for the customs charges n sh!t.

If it was StewMac they probably shipped it from Germany. Nearly all the things I've orfered off 'em in the past has come from Germany and I've never been stung for tax.

The cut-off is 22 euros as far as I remember. Commercial or not.

I think you are correct at 22 Euros. My theory is that if the customs guys havent got time to get around to every box then they will start with the largest boxes first.
And obviously if they opened every box then they would be making it clear that they didn't need overtime or extra staff

I think the issue usually arises out of senders failing to correctly declare the value or nature of the contents. The item has to be categorised so the correct rate of duty can be applied.

They can hardly open a box and look at the contents and say, "oh that's a such and such which is clearly an electronics item, and is valued at 360 euros". If it's not written on the box, they're fairly boned. So the question is whether they can afford to track down every box than isn't marked and find out if it should have been. I'm thinking the cost of paying people to do that for every item would be greater than the income received, so they take an arbitrary number of unmarked packages at random.

If a shop does get caught declaring an export fraudulently I'd imagine they'd be in quite a lot of trouble though.

I'm pretty sure that any shop or other proper commercial enterprise would include an invoice with the goods (possibly in Japanese :p )

EDIT: Actually I bet that if teh goods were not declared properly the customs could arbitrarily charge you whatthey wanted and it would be up to you to prove them wrong.

I doubt it, since that would probably lead to allegations of corruption. Most likely it's on them to discover the correct charge in that event - but I wouldn't be surprised if they have the power to hold the item indefinitely until they figure it out.

Whats the story with chrisguitars.com regarding delivery/customs. Do I pick up at the post office and pay them the customs money when I collect it, or do they deliver to the door and I pay them the money when they hand it over or what?

I agree with you Eoin, except for the bit where you say "it's on them to discover the correct charge". That would imply that they would actually do some work. :D
