    Hi,

I am thinking of taking a package holiday in Luxor, Egypt.
The price is great for 4/5 stars and there are plenty of interesting places to visit .
However I am little bit concerned about safety issues over there.
This is obviously why the prices are so low, but browsing through the web I have found nothing but positive reviews but these were mainly from 2004/2005 season.
If anyone has any feedback from past experiences there or on current situations, could you post a reply - thanks!!

i was there a few years back, i'm guessing the deal is for the st.josephs hotel?

anyway, it looks nice in the book and the pics, but as soon as u leave the hotel your just harrassed by the locals trying to sell u ****, and offering a ride on the horse and carriage thing.

but if you dont mind that and can shrug them off easy, its an ok place, theres a couple of temples within walking distance. its worth a visit, but i certainly wouldnt go back, we ended up staying in the hotel just to avoid the hassel, then we went up to cairo.

Thanks, yep St Josephs was one of the hotels I was looking at or the Sonesta Hotel or the Iberotel. But now I'm thinking of avoiding Luxor.
I wouldnt mind hassle from the locals at all, but I'm more scared of the threat of terrorism. And I think that I'd end up just staying in the resort, which would be crap.
Also I found out that you cant even paddle in the Nile, cos of diseases.

So now I'm looking into resorts on the Red Sea, mainly the areas of Hurghada, El Gouna or Makadi Bay.
If anyone has any feedback of these places, let me know.

    Thanks ;)

Was in Hurghada a couple of years ago.Stayed in the Hilton Resort for a week.Lovely spot especially if you're into water sports. It has a beach at the end of the hotel.Would definately go back.Went with Budget travel

I was in luxor just after the dahab bombing
security wise things are very tight over there -The sonesta hotel has metal detectors and security guards on the way in.Luxor has a lot of cruise ship custom and they are very protective of tourism there,
I never felt I needed to watch my bag or wallet I think crime is minimal.
Saying that I did find luxor hassley esp when I walked around on my own (Girl) but I got over that and with others with me I had no problems
I would probably stay somewhere like the Movenpick resort for that reason on its own island and so you would have a refuge .
Sonesta was lovely and the st joeseph is almost opposite the sonesta so nile views etc. Also they are both very central
I loved the nile and the feluccas (just not the captains ) and trips to the temples etc were amazing
Cant really see the point in hurghada its like a huge european resort with no egyptians allowed .Snorkelling was nice in the red sea but it was more expensive than anywhere else i found in egypt .Hassle wise it was easier
