    I bought a Macbook Pro and I have these games on them, they all work fine with no slowdown:

    -> Quake 4 (Universal Binary)
    -> Doom 3 (Universal Binary)
    -> Call of Duty 2 (Universal Binary)
    -> Baldur's Gate 2 (PowerPC Native)
    -> Homeworld 2 (PowerPC Native)

    They're all really good games, but I like Doom the best. Its really, really SCARY! :D

    That link doesn't work by the way, what game are you looking at?

    Am looking at getting an iMac myself, and figure the 17" model would do me fine, after all the slightly slower processor and smaller HDD wouldn't bother me too much; that said the graphics card would be an issue, especially if I put WinXP on the machine... is the graphics card in it decent enough to play most games (you can upgrade the ram on the 20" model, not the 17" though)

    I have the 20" iMac with the graphics upgrade. I've only played WoW on it so far, but it runs it at native resolution with all graphics options on high and the frame rate never drops below 30. (WoW is very RAM dependant and I only have 1 gig in it. It prefers 2)

    tbh the games I'd be looking to play are likely to be RTS style, not into MMORPG's and most of the other game types are nicely covered through the various consoles I have (online FPS on my XBox for example); they tend to be RAM reliant too for the full experience, although I'd be getting at least 1GB (on one card to make it as easy as possible to throw another in there at a later date)... it's just that most new RTS games have decent graphics too and so you need a respectable (while not cutting edge) card

    You know you want WoW in your life :p
    I really can't wait until the autumn, when I'm getting my Macbook Pro... I'm getting sick of running it on minimum settings on my iBook!

    intel macs will boot XP anyway so you could use any PC games

    My house- dont forget to take graphics cards into consideration.

    Just for the record:

    Black Hawk Down [power pc] on Macbook. - Unplayable. Sound and images fuzzy and gittery.

    Age Of Empires 2 [power pc] on Macbook - Uninstallable.

    Dont get me wrong, I still love my Macbook.

    Yeah; I'd say it'd be a MBP or iMac if you're looking for the widest range of games (gfx card wise). Not sure what the Mini is like, the PowerPC version had gfx as a much lauded featre, but the intel one doesn't

    RTS games dont really need as much vram as other types of games like fps so you should be alright with whatever the standard card is - provided its not too bad. what is the standard card with an imac?

    some of them come with the x1600 gpu, which will run pretty much anything at medium settings or high in some cases

    As a follow up to my previous post, I installed WindowsXP using Bootcamp and gave the Prey demo a go, it ran at 1024*768 with all graphics options with no slowdown. FPS games are much more demanding on graphics hardware than RTS games in most cases so I would say if you go for an iMac or Macbook Pro you won't go wrong for games.

    can anyone recommend a good site for buying mac games?

    I have a new iMac intel 17", though i put wow on it and might never play another game again

    Nice one; looking at a 17" imac at the moment; probably go for that over MBP once I can afford it.

    I have the Mac Book Pro, and I'm constantly looking for games to work on it, so if possible keep posting games that will and will not work.

    I hear ya, the very first thing I'll install on my Macbook Pro when I get it in the autumn will be ye olde World of Warcraft :) Running it on my iBook at bare minimum settings at the moment, enough to turn me into such a WoW-junkie though!

    http://www.compub.com/ is based in Limerick,Dublin and Cork (I think)
    which has great second hand games ,try even PC World,they do a good selection or if you want a better choice the online apple store.

    DON'T BUY WARCRAFT 3!!!

    Its doesn't have a universal binary. It won't work on a intel imac or macbookpro

    Quake III and Return to Castle Wolfenstein work on MAC, both a bit old at this stage but still super sweet games, especially online.

    There is a Mac version of the emulator ScummVm which will run all the old Lucas Arts point 'n' click games.

    Of course you usually need an original copy of the game BUT both Beneath A Steel Sky and Flight Of The Amazon Queen have been made legally available (see the downloads section of the ScummVm site) so you get two classic games for free.

    I've only played (and finished) Beneath A Steel Sky on an 20" intel iMac and it worked fine with no crashes etc graphics aren't cutting edge but then they're old games I haven't had a chance to play Flight.. yet. I'm trying to get my hands on the Monkey Islands at the moment

    FotAQ is such an irreverently humourous game -- and it's got plenty of innuendo, which is a nice touch :rolleyes:
    Still trying to get NES Maniac Mansion to work in ScummVM -- the file has to be edited with a hex editor...

    Just managed to get hold of Day of the tentacle/Sam and Max hit the Road/Full Throttle and Curse of monkey Island.

    And I am frothing at the prospect of playing them again!

    I recommend surfing www.macgamer.com and www.macgamefiles.com -- from the latter you can also download demos of games, like Quake 4, etc..

    Ehhhh.. Demos? You just start to enjoy the game, and then it's over!

  • Closed Accounts Posts: 2,784 ✭✭✭Urban Weigl

    Demos give you an idea if you'd like to buy the game, though. It kinda sucks if you buy something, than figure out you don't like it, or it won't run properly on your computer.

    Can windows clients join a mac server for the same games or vice versa?

    For the vast majority of games, yes.

    By the way, The Sims 2 is another fine game that will run extremely well on the Intel iMac. I just ordered my copy, got it off eBay for €30.31 including shipping to Ireland.
