Hi, ok here goes (my first post ever),

Ok i have been using bittorent for about a year now with no problems, great download speeds etc after i set up a static ip and opened ports, and firewall.....
However i have just moved house and switched to a wireless router (Netopia 3347wg). I have followed the same procedure to open the ports on this router but it doesnt seem to have worked. i am on eircom, and connecting to the router via a Belkin wireless adaptor. my internet connection speed is fine when browsing but Bittorent is only geting 8-10 KB/s.i have done all the obvious things..... gone into router settings:
    expert mode,
    configure,
    advanced,
    nat,
    define custom service,
opened port 6881 and then enabled selected my ip address from the drop down bar clicked ok and then restarted router.
my firewall is not blocking bittorent so i am completly head wrecked why will it not work with my new router????
    Please help.

What connection speed are you getting off the router? Not just in BT, but as a whole?

I use the same router. I find that the NAT is practically impossible to configure. Are you using more than one PC on your network? What I did was turned off the firewall on the router itself as that was causing problems for me, just make sure you have firewalls on any PCs connection to the network. I get fine torrent speeds.

Ports 6881 to 6889 are the "default bittorrent ports", thus are blacklisted by many ISPs, and thus any traffic going through those ports will be VERY slow, or non-existant, tbh.

I'm wondering why this hasn't happened to you before, as before I changed to some random ports (and was still using the default ports), I was getting barely anything.

Oh. Erm, is ONLY 6881 opened? That means only one port is open, thus only one thing at a time can download. Its generally said that you should have at least 8 ports open, so that you can download more than one torrent at a time.

Finally, ensure you open the port number for TCP and UDP, as some programs require both.

    Have a 3347W myself, btw.

    hi,
Thanks for the replies..... the speed through my router is fine when browsing or doing general downloading...... just BT is slow..... regarding port 6881.... the reason i opened that is because thats the same one i had open at my old address while connecting on the netopia caymann modem and it worked fine then.... i have tried a range random ports but that still has not worked...... i will try opening UDP too and see if that works.... i only have one pc on tha network.... and an xbox (wireless) however the xbox will not feckin work either but thats another post!!! thanks for the replies ....... i am really missing the higher download speeds....

sorry just one more question..... would i be better off getting a new router (i.e. a different model) or is that not necessary......?

use utorrent and turn on Upnp on your router. I have the same router with eircom and doing this and turning off the firewall on the router enabled me to have great download speeds.

thanks wonder boy will give that a try...... by firewal do u mean window firewall? and is utorrent any different to bittorrent? i.e limited to 3 consecutive downloads, and compatable with all torrents?

uTorrent is another bittorrent client. You can set the max number of concurrent downloads yourself. It's also the torrent client that I use, and having tried a few I find it to be the best due to its good interface, DHT and small RAM footprint.

I'd say wonderboy is referring to the firewall on the router itself. This is also what I was talking about when I advised turning off the firewall. On the main page of your routers interface go to firewall on the left hand side and set it to off. That firewall is so unconfigurable as to be useless.

Thanks everyone for the help, and for taking the time to reply. turning off the firewall on my router did speed up bittorrent, and not only that it got my xbox working online again. i tried to open the ports for UDP aswell but i can only select one option UDP or TCP so i set up two custom services one with udp and one with tcp for the same port range is that correct?...... many thanks. I am going to check out utorrent on your advice thanks for that. I have had a look in the list in NAT to enable uPnP but its not there? where do i find that sorry for all the questions! i really am very grateful for all your help. thanks.

i have downloaded Utorrent...and opened the port 32459 (a range from 32459 to 32470),,,,, i cannot find any where to allow or open uPnP on my router i opened it on windows firewall..... when i try to use utorrent nothing happens and in the logger box it just says unable to map uPnP port to.......... any ideas?

in your router menu, go into expert mode and then connection and tick the box beside UPnP.

I was having this trouble with network games of FM2005. I configured the NAT according to instruction that worked for countless people, but with that Netopia router the only way it would work was disabling the firewall, its an absolute joke.

Anything above "off" for the firewall on this router seems to block all incoming connections. It's a serious waste of time. I'm considering getting a new router altogether. The range and speed of the wireless connections aren't really of a high enough standard. My big problem though is that I can't get computers on the wireless network to recognise computers on the wired network which is a serious pain, as I'd like to have some kind of centralised file storage.
