MacOS question?

I have a job to do with 2 Apple iMacs (coloured style), one tray loading, one slot loading, will I be able to run MacOS X (any version, or if not would Ubuntu Breezy run on it I know their spec mightn't be good enough for Dapper) on these, because Eircom have installed in the building and they said that there would need to be an operating system upgrade if you were thinking of using them in an office situation. I was thinking of plugging a cat 5 cable from the router plugging it into one of the sockets that are there and then hooking up 2 of the macs via the 2 other cat 5 sockets. A windows HP laptop will be used as well and I want to use the wireless function on the nettopia to give access to it and eventually Samba all the resources between the computers. (its an office btw)

Does the networking arrangement sound like a good plan?

they will both run OS X alright, but they wont be very nippy, espcially the tray load and espcially if they still have the original HD's and less than 256Mb RAM.

Luckily RAM for these is stupidly cheap. PC66/100 SODIMM in the case of trayload and PC100/133 DIMM in the slot load.

If you are running X, Panther (10.3) seems to be sweetest on that kind of hardware. Avoid tiger unless you REALLY need the extra features

If however you want to run OS9, be forwarned that it does not have any SAMBA support, you will need software called dave to connect to SAMBA shares. Not sure what €ircom mean by needing an upgrade though. OS 9 is sufficent for broadband, indeed many offices and sound recording studios continue to run on OS 9.

If you are going linux, an older more lightweight distro of yellowdog may be perfect for the hardware you are using.

    HTH

The networking with the windows PC is really essential, RAM can be upgraded but what would be the issue with the hdd

Issue with the HD is speed. Newer OS put quite a tax on an older 6GB or thereabouts HD and contribute a lot to performance. Its not neccacarily the interface or the rotational speeds (dont go 5200 RPM with imacs or you may have heat issues) but the actual improvments in aureal density that have been made over the years.

Its all down to how responsive you want the system to be really. You might be happy enough with a 6Gb. Personally id would probably drive me nuts, especially after an unclean shutdown!

Despite what eircom say I'm going to try network the apple coloured iMacs with the CAT5 cabling that exists already. I'm going to connect the computer by wireless. Is there any way of getting the Windows laptop to use apple talk or getting the Mac OS 9 to use Samba??

sorry for double posting. was there today I connected the mac directly to the router with a UTP cable and then wired it to the rest of the wired lan using a straight through cable. Works fine on OS 9 anyway, as for samba I might just set up a FTP server for files to be sent
