A few weeks ago I was trying to reinstall windows xp pro to start from stratch. I had done this a few times before with complete success but this time for whatever reason I'm left with an option upon bootin the PC to select one of two Windows Xp OSs to run. So as far as I can see the PC is set up to dual boot, but between two of the same os.

Only problem is that when I select the second os in the option list an error appears on screen and it wont load.

Any idea how to get rid of this second os? Both are installed on the same partition as well

Backup boot.ini to some kind of removable drive.

Open it and remove the second line in the [Operating Systems] group.

Start->run->msconfig. Click on boot.ini tab and it will more than likely detect the "extra" OS and offer to remove it for you from boot.ini automatically.

Hmm, I wasn't aware that did that. Always assumed it was just a dumb editor.
