Hi just wondering if its possible to expand the black borders on a monitor as they seem to take over a good section of the screen (i dont mean the resolution, i mean the outside borders on a crt). I heard there might be program to do this or would i have to actually open up the monitor to do so?

There's a lot of things this could be.

Sometimes the monitor doesnt detect the screen resolution correctly and it needs a switch on or off. Or changing the resolution in windows (right click on desktop, select properties) back and forth sometimes fixes it.

How old is the monitor? A very old monitor might not be plug and play.

What is your windows screen resolution? Use the right click above to make sure that you are not in a widescreen mode or using a non-supported mode.

You should always be able to manually stretch the picture using the controls on the monitor - they are usually found on the front or underneath the bottom edge.

Generally you have 4 buttons, A select, a left & right to navigate through the menu and an exit button.

They may do double duty as brightness/contrast or volume controls.

Thanks for the reply but ya are thinking of the different problem, which i commonly come across as well. The black borders i'm talking about are there when you turn off the monitor, they're like black paint on the outside of screen. Its the farthest the screen can push and on certain sides as far as the mouse can go. Its not a major problem just be handy if i could get rid of it.

Edit:: Its seems to be called Overscan
2.1.10 - Why is there a big black border around my monitor's image?

That's there for a reason. Earlier (read: before the mid-1990s) CRTs had problems with maintaining a sharp focus all the way to the edge of the monitor and distortion due to the curve of the CRT face. Leaving a black border around the image helps reduce these problems by eliminating the area of the CRT where they occur. However, a lot of people don't like that border (or the slight problems don't bother them). The surest way to remove it is to get inside the monitor and adjust the image height and width pots, but this is 1) dangerous for the inexperienced, 2) often difficult, and 3) may result in damage to your computer or monitor over time.

Overscan is one of the issues I was talking about.

Your issue is with how the monitor is manufactured.

Those black borders are there to present the most square bit of the CRT to the user and hide the curvy sides.

I suppose it may be possible to remove them, but it wouldnt gain you anything since you would need a curvy picture to fill them, thus losing the square corners of your computer desktop.

You'll just have to lump it Im afraid, or splash out on a cheap LCD, if it annoys you that much. You could get a second hand 15" or 17" for peanuts.
