I was checking my hotmail and got the following message:

"A script on this page is causing Internet Explorer to run slowly. If it continues to run, your computer may become unresponsive. Do you want to abort the script?" - options being Yes or No....

I hit Yes and a couple of minutes l8r while I'm still in Hotmail - the message comes up again. I've done a google search on it and the solution is all double greek to me .... I've got AVG Free on my computer (XP).

Can anyone help me please?

You can turn disable script debugging, in IE go to Tools-Internet Options-Advanced and under Browsing tick the boxes for Disable Script Debugging (both in IE and other). That should sort it for you.

Ah forgot under the Advanced tab in Internet Options, untick the box beside "Display a notification about every script error".

Dont think its a virus but no harm running an anti-virus scan and an anti-spyware program also. Hmm, do you use Yahoo Toolbar by any chance? What version of IE, 6 I would assume?

yes, i use yahoo toolbar - I use it for their popup blocker/anti spy .... this a bad idea? should I get rid and use something else? Yes, Version 6 of IE.......

    Thanks for your time...

I was googling about and it seems like it has caused a few of those errors. You can try and uninstall it, restart the computer and then try again. Sure you can reinstall the toolbar if it still brings up the error without the toolbar.

Ruu - have uninstalled yahoo toolbar but still no joy - its only happening when I'm in hotmail ..I'm baffled..... I'm using AVG, can you recommend an alternative (free) to the yahoo popup blocker/anti spy thingy ?

Kamikazi - is firefox just an alternative to using Internet explorer? I installed it an went into Hotmail and had no problems.... I'm just not familiar with it tho'....

Thanks guys for all your help and advices.....

txs Ruu ... so is firefox just another type of internet explorer?..

  • Closed Accounts Posts: 36,634 ✭✭✭✭Ruu_Old

Its another type of browser, not made and integrated into Windows (like IE) and not developed by Microsoft and has a lot of great features. Tabbed browsing being one of the most popular.

I understand now:o ... I'll just use firefox in future so.... the msg keeps popping up no matter what I try in Hotmail in IE... ....

Would you recommend me downloading any other programs (i.e. firewall ./antispy etc?)..

    Thanks again.

In laymans terms .... do you know what this error msg is that I'm getting ? is it a virus or is it some kind of programming fault with IE?....... the answer is probably over my head but thought I'd ask....:)

I would advise you to keep your AVG up to date, as I am sure you have anyway. Download Windows Defender, Spybot and Ad-Aware, at least one of them is bound to keep your system clean.

The message you receive is a common one and is displayed because a web page script is not working well, not that its a whole lot of use to most users. Most of the time disabling it like I mentioned works fine, other times it can be stubborn. :)
