Well technically any Christian is "born-again" but I'm assuming you are using the term in the Evangelical or Penteocostal way as a spiritual re-awakening (aren't they normally the ones who use the term "Born Again"?). Anyway there is a Pentecostal church in Cellbridge. No idea what is is like though (I'm not Christian).

    > [Heart_N_Soul] Im just wondering are there many Born Again Christians using this forum??

I believe one of the forum moderators is, though I'll wait for him to confirm that. There are also fundamentalist christians of the bluest hue, as there are atheists of the reddest. We're a merry bunch -- welcome!

    > Can anyone recommend some albums for me to get to listen to?

For "christian rock", the only thing I can recommend is a grenade and a prolonged sprint in the other direction. Personally, I'd recommend trying out either of Bach's Passions, and the organ music of the French mystics Tournemire and Messian, but they're not to everybody's taste.

    > [Wicknight] Well technically any Christian is "born-again"

Not sure about that. My own understanding is that people who refer to themselves as "born-again" are typically people who've come to believe (generally in their teens or very early twenties) that "salvation" is the one dogma which makes one a complete christian, rather than the traditional christian view that one must believe a series of dogmas to be considered one. I'm open to correction on this, but I suspect there's as much inter-faction agreement on this as there is on any other issue!

True, but that is a rather recent, narrow, interpritation of the term "born again" that is mentioned in the Bible.

For example the Catholic Church teaches that someone who is baptised is born-again. A lot of other Christians churches would also reject the more fundamentalists definition of "born-again," that being that it is only someone who has had a profound experience of the spirit of God is "born again" They would say that all Christians who have been baptised and who live a Christian life are born-again, even if they never have a profound life changing experience with God.

Anyways, don't want to drag this off topic. The exact definition of "born again" is probably better in another thread

Welcome heartnsoul. There are a number of born againers on this board of which I am one. I attend a Christian and Missionary Alliance church in Calgary Canada.
My interpretation of one who is born again is quite simple. It is one who has accepted God's free gift of grace by accepting Jesus as their personal saviour. No works required. Baptism follows as an act of obedience and a public demonstration of your decision to be commited to Christ, whereas the actual acceptance might be a very personal occasion.

As for music, I am not a music person. I can live without it and don't follow it at all. I'm tone deaf and tend to hear a load of noise whatever I listen to. i will leave that topic up to others who are more knowledgable.

All the best in your relationship to the living God. May you continue to grow in relationship with Him.

    Brian

I am very glad to hear you have become a Christian. As far as Christian music is concerned, I echo a lot of what our resident sketpic, Robin has had to say but if you are looking for some rock music written by Christians then I can only strongly recommend Sufjan Stevens and Jars of Clay.

There is a church called Naas Christian Fellowship (behind SuperValu I think) and there is Naas Presbyterian Church. Both of which are Evangelical Christian churches. Any church that proclaims the Gospel is good though so don't get narrow minded about your Christianity- you have a lifetime to let that effect settle in!

Feel free to pm me if you'd like more info or have any questions.

I was about to mention him myself. Great music. 'Seven Swans' probably has the most overtly religious songs, but his other stuff has the theme too.

Heh there is actually some great 'christian' music out there, you just have to look a little harder. Though the good stuff isn't usually what you'd call overtly christian. OP, if you like any metal or punk I'd recommend bands like Zao, Underoath, Comeback Kid, As I Lay Dying, Norma Jean, Heislegend, Thrice, Mewithoutyou, even some Megadeth!

    Hi Guys,
Thanks for your help! Iv bought a couple on Ebay:
    Elvis Gospel CD
Ruben Studdard - I need an angel (he's the guy from Americal Pop Idol)
Michelle Williams - Heart to yours (she's from Destiny's child - its a gospel cd)

So im looking forward to getting these, then ill probably get Jars of Clay, Kirk Franklin or Mary Mary... its seems there is actually loads of music out there, I found some websites with some recommendations!

I was really into Evanescence, love the music and though it was Christian but I saw on a website that they arent at all...
    They're still great though!

You do realise you can be a Christian without liking that kind of music? I can't stand most of it to be honest. Can't stand most hymns either. Bad music is bad music and replacing "baby" with "Jesus" doesn't change that.

For the record though, Sufjan rules!

Hi just wondering is Christian Felllowship the same as being a born again Christian. i've been to a few meetings in Cork with my neighbours. It consists of lots of singing, a fair bit of scrupture reading and prayer. Once a month there are guest speakers who give testimony of their faith and of how it has been both challenged and enhanced. Perhaps if both are not the same some one could explain the difference to me. I know that to be born again , you have to take a leap of faith and entrust your self to be saved by God's free gift of grace.

    Thanks,
    Sheil :)

    Welcome, Sister!

I'm not into the music in a big way, but for modern music with a message and that honours the Lord, see Steve Camp's stuff. He has a website where you can sample I believe.

No Christian Fellowship does not mean you are a Christian. Just as me sitting at the pub makes me a drinker.

You have to come to aplace in time where you accept Christ as your saviour. Being in Christian Fellowship is a great start. Ask one of your friends there what it means to become a Christian and they will be glad to walk with you. It is an exciting journey.

All the best and keep us posted.

i can recomend many albums...none of them christian though

pink floyd-dark side of the moon
    pantera-reinventing the steel
    metallica-kill em all

Why would you want to listen to music that glorifies sex and violence? I know some of the albums you listed don't do this. Many I have never heard of, so I could be wrong on your list. When I do see MTV videos and currecnt music it does glorify sex, drugs and violence.

You listen to Christian music because it should glorify God through Christ.

I know. In fact there is a lot of Christian music that I can't stand. I don't even listen to our local Christian radio.

A UK band called "Delirious" is really great to listen to. Specifically if you can get hold of their "Cutting Edge" CD's - they'll really put you in the mood to worship the Lord.

Other really nice worship music that I would recommend would be anything from Hillsongs, Robin Mark (Excellent), Vineyard Music, Matt Redman.

I'd be into the worship music but also contemporary christian metal and hard rock. I also listen to normal secular music but nothing beats a good worship CD when you need a little upliftment.

Check out www.christianbook.com - it's a great site with CDs at excellent prices from the US. There's not much of a selection in the stores here. Victory Christian Fellowship on Dame Street has a bookshop which could probably order some stuff in for you.

I hope you enjoy your first steps as a "born again" Christian. It only gets better from here :)

    Regards
    Mike

The requiems of Faure and Mozart and Mozart's Mass in Cm for the win!

  • Moderators, Society & Culture Moderators Posts: 24,427 Mod ✭✭✭✭robindch

    > The requiems of Faure and Mozart

Crumbs, if you're going for Requiems, do Duruflé's one instead! It's ten times Mozart's efforts, and a hundred times Fauré's (whose form he copied, but result he far exceeded). With the arguable exception of Tallis' monumental Spem in Alium, Duruflé's Domine, Jesu Christe and In Paradisum, and his Requiem as a whole, must be amongst the most subtly flawless, and exquisitely sublime, choral works ever written.

drugs-in moderation like also a good thing

you seem kinda anti sex and drugs, are they not like i duno gifts god gave us.. do we have to spend all our time abstaining from the worlds pleasures?

some of the albums have anti war themes to them by the way

also none of that is mtv crap

Brian confirms that god and his flavour of christianity is ultimately real and good and has few other proper options and the way to live your life.

Most people get up in the morning, with their own brains and carry out their daily business without needing to be patronised by pretentious dogmatic antiquated religious contradictory thought running their lives.

Some religions tell you to go to church. Others go further and tell you to repent and confess.

Others tell you to get down on your knees and pray to god on a prayer mat facing south or some direction.

Others recommend a life is well spent is holding your left arm up for 25 years to show devotion to god.

I'm not saying it is totally all waffle.

But modern people can make their own minds up.

When done in context of a loving marriage. Otherwise it is abuse of a good thing.

Doesn't the Bible glorify sex and violence? They seems to get mentioned an awful lot, particularly by God.

They don't have music on MTV any more, unfortunately. Just hour after hour of crap reality TV

Well depends on what you mean by "glorify".

God wiping out all life on Earth being presented as a good thing might be construde as glorifying violence. In fact nearlly all the violence in the Bible is considered good, is that not glorifying violence as a means to an end?
Shows how long its been since I turned it on.

Yeah, it really has got crap. If you want music you have to buy a digital package (which comes with a Christian music channel btw)

that He did. The Bible also states
    Romans 13:13
Let us behave decently, as in the daytime, not in orgies and drunkenness, not in sexual immorality and debauchery, not in dissension and jealousy.

    Ephesians 5:18
Do not get drunk on wine, which leads to debauchery. Instead, be filled with the Spirit.

The Bible never says don't drink alcohol. Just not to get drunk. Too many people unfortunately drink to get drunk.

Well Heart_n_soul, if you're still around you'll have seen that the Christian forum on boards is........ a broad church!

I kinda like it, but it can be a bit scary.....

SO, Yes there are some evangelical born againers in here, and I'm happy and proud to stand in that corner.

As to Music...... well, personal taste comes into it, I like a bit of 80s rock so love Stryper and Petra, a bit more current, Mercy me and Third day.......

less Grindy..... Delerious? have been mentioned, Robin Mark is always safe (if a little.... well.... traditional....) and Kieth and Kirsten Getty have written some of the finest worship songs in the last 50 years.

As to churches, I'm assuming you're in Dublin?

    http://www.saintcatherines.ie/

Big old building that LOOKS like a church, really contemporary inside. Great folk, and it's where I go if I'm in Dub.

    Welcome to the fold!
