    Hello kind folks,

When saving an excel file recently my friend saw that the file doubled in size.
Has anyone come accross this before ?

    Cheers

Is he saving the file in dual format i.e. instead of just a normal worksheet, it is saved in say Excel 95 format aswell as say 2003 format. This would cause the file size to increase. A bit more info would be help as to what version of Excel he is running.

It is being saved as a excel 2000 file. As it's original i.e. it should not have any extra version information.

The file is just over 5meg. Real puzzler.

    Thanks for the reply !

Has he got Fast Save turned on?

(any particular reason why he's using Excel to create Word files?)

    Hi,

Auto save is turned on alright, this is a major feature that is needed.
The data in the excel document is important.

The document also hold many macros and linkages.

(my bad about that mistake, changed now)

Fast save is different than auto save. More information can be found here:

Thats actually only for word though. Are there many macros/formulae in the spreadsheet? If so were any macros deleted?

There are many macros alright, but none of them have been deleted.

OT - fast save in word is not your friend, since it reduces the chances of recovering a corrupt document,

images bloat a lot, (word 95 hitting 20MB per page was common)
    also remove empty worksheets,
in case there is any junk highlight and delete all cells below the active area and do the same to the right.

copy all the cells to a new worksheet (leaving the old sheet behind)
if still big the paste special to rule out what is the big thing

try file save as - to different versions of excel to see which bloats most
