    Hi,

Just wondering if anyone has travelled to sydney in Oz and gotten a job in IT. I have a degree from DIT in Computer Eng. and have worked for Dell and AIB's IT dept. but so far I can't get a job over here.

Has anyone any advice on agencies over here?

    Cheers

    Tony

What sort of IT job are you looking for? Programming, helpdesk, security, admin etc. Also, how much experience do you have in that area? (ie: 1 year, 5 years?)

I'd be looking for a helpdesk or network role I think. In terms of experience, this is where the problem lies for me. I worked as a business sales rep for Dell before I left for 6 months which isnt really an IT role and then I worked in the network enineering dept. in AIB for 4 months 2 years ago.

Ive been rung by a few agencies saying that the cv was good enough for an entry level helpdesk role but as soon as they hear about my visa only being the holiday one they arent interested.

Looks like I'll have to stay with my high profile filing job for the minute.

There are supposedly crying out for IT people in Aus at the moment. Once you have an IT degree you can get a 5yr working visa. Here's the link

I was in Aus three years ago and got a testing job with Westpac through Hays IT. I then got sponsored to stay for four years.

Keep with your current job and apply to as many agencies as you can. even bullsh*t about your experience. It can be a case of being lucky

So you are trying to get an IT job based on 4 months experience? I don't think you have a hope. :o I got a job easy enough in Sydney and so did a lot of folk I know but they all had at least 2 years experience in IT. My advice would be to not concentrate on the job and just enjoy your time out there...I know I am jealous just thinking of you being there and me being stuck here!!!
