Setting up a DNS server

I've got a linux box here which I use for dev and other bits and bobs, and I want to use it as a DNS server as well.

How would I go about setting it up as a DNS server, so that if I type in http://dev01 or http://intranet it would resolve to the correct IP of the boxes?

I know how to setup my router to point to a DNS server, just not sure how I would set up the DNS on the box to handle this.

    Any help greatly appreciated.

Have a look at the DNS howto...
    http://www.linux.org/docs/ldp/howto/DNS-HOWTO.html

If you just want to be able to resolve these domain names locally on the linux box you can add entries in your "/etc/hosts" file (see man hosts). If you want this box to act as a DNS server for other machines to resolve these names, set up a "caching name server" as per the Howto.

    Here's another link http://www.freeos.com/articles/3956/

Set up the caching name server and then have a look at how the individual records are added.

    Take a look at dnsmasq.
It should do what you need.
