Ok, deep breath. I dont know how to put this but I just read this in a Flickr thread
    9.16am. June 12th. 2006...

I woke my MacBook Pro from sleep, the applications folder was empty and the beachball of death came on screen. After shutting it down, and booting back up again (normally and in Target Disk Mode), only the Apple logo appears on screen, and the OS will not load.

The drive is making some brutal noises, perhaps trying to tell me goodbye and how good the ride has been. It shall visit an undertaker, AKA, a nice chap at the Genius Bar tomorrow.

Bow wow old friend, bow wow. Photos of the death to follow.

Right, I just put in my order for my new MBP about 3 hours ago... due to collect in the morning, now getting more than slightly worried. Anyone else hear horror stories like this?

Oh dear, not encouraging then! DVD burning, sniffle, poor iBook just aint up to the job. Will have to find some other backup solution.

Considering cancelling order, maybe waiting for next gen, or is that too rash? Tis alot of money and whatever about backing up info I cant afford to be without a machine!

I think you are being a little rash there.

Any hard drive is liable to die at any time regardless of the make or model .. that is why servers have hot plug drives and RAID arrays and why back up is so important.

Yeah I guess that is a more logical way to think about it (as a comp scientist I cant think like a logical person anymore ;) ).

    Its comments like
Never buy Revision A stuff from Apple
    and
told you mate, first gen tend to be the most wonky.
that are freaking me out. MY trust has always been in Apple, I have only ever bought Macs but just a little concerned that the intel family might not be throughly road tested yet.

if you knew how many pc's came back to manufacturers due to problems like that, you'd probably never buy anything
