Giving Blood - UK?

Okay, this isn't really a personal issue, more of a query. I am just wondering if anyone knows whether or not its true that if you lived in England during a certain time, you cannot give blood due to the risk of CJD or something along those lines? Just asking now as I would love to give blood at some point.

I lived in England from around 1988-1991/2. Any information would be greatly appreciated.

It is true - I am excluded also because of this. It sounds over the top, but I think CJD can remain dormant for so long, that they really have to play safe after the Hep C problems they had.
    Never give blood if:
    ...
You have spent 1 year or more, in total, in the UK in the years 1980 to 1996

    Thats a pity :(
You are a male who has ever had anal or oral sex with another male, even if a condom or other form of protection was used

I don't understand this one.. is it because of the risk of HIV/AIDS?

It is due to the threat of being a potential carrier of nvCJD (human mad cow disease).

I also lived in the UK (Slough, Berkshire) from 1988-91 and at first could give blood because the rule was if you lived there for three or more years (I was there two and three quaters) but they have since changed it to one year and will not take my blood anymore!

I heard CJD can lay dormant in your system for up to ten years and its been fifteen now for me, they still won't take my blood though.

Seems they think it could incubate for up to 50 years.
I guess the vCJD "timebomb" hasnt (thankfully) materialised yet.
