You can always get UK rail tickets at departure time, no need to book ahead.

The open tickets are expensive but they are valid on any train, much cheaper tickets can be had by advance booking online but you must select the trains you want at the time of booking.

For Internet fares two singles are usually cheaper than return tickets. For open tickets returns are usually cheaper.

Don't try to get the tickets posted to ROI, select the option to collect at the station ticket machines.

[Edit] Just checked. there are only a few trains with cheap advance fares left through Virgin £15-£26 single. 15.58, 17.32 and 18.30 departures from Manchester. there are not many of those left and if they are not already gone they are removed a day before departure.

The regular fares are £44.50 open single and £54.80 saver return.
