I got a call from an agency who found my CV on monster. They specialise in my area and have asked me to come in on tuesday for an interview/chat. I've never
done anything remotely like this before so does anyone know how formal I should expect it to be, would I need to wear a suit or anything like that?

If in doubt, overdress. You can always remove tie or jacket to dress down. No one will ever mark you down for overdressing, even if u feel a lil stupid. But underdressing will always hurt your overall performance.

As regards interview, be prepared to answer the standard questions, able to discuss the achievements on your cv, what sort of job you're seeking now, etc. As it's an agency interview they prob just want to get a feel of what experience you have and suitability for any positions they have on their books.

I don't know what area you're in but in my experience you'll be wasting your time even showing up.

I have yet to find a recruitment agency where they know their arse from their elbow.

I agree up to a point. Coming from an IT-slant - These people are recruiters & generally know little of the specifics required for particular roles.

However, if you are thinking of making a move it is worthwhile meeting these people if for no other reason than if a job comes up they will be more likely to recommend someone that they have met face-to-face than someone who didn't bother their asre coming to meet them.

Don't get stressed about it. These type of "interviews" where there's no specific role is more of a get-to-know you session. They really want to make sure that you don't have two heads.

From my expereince , recruitment agencies typically employ people who possess a qualification in the chosen field of expertise i.e. IT, Construction etc. an usually this is coupled with a number of years experience. The reason why agencies like to meet people is so that they can actully get a feel for what the person is most suitable for and are they actually genuine job seekers and not just time wasters "testing the water".

My advice is dress smart / casual. Know your CV pretty well, be confiedent and know why you want to leave your current employer. Be clear on your availability for potential interview, your salary expectations, your notice perios with current employer and what you want from your next position.

If you do this you will be fine.
