    Hello all,

sorry if posted before. I cant view AVI files on my pc - quicktime or windows media player wont let me view them. Do I need to buy/download some kind of special software to view AVI files? (even a "free trial" version would do)

My pc is old, running windows 98, and I have a dialup connection. Any suggestions welcome

    thanks.

The Avi file could be encoded with a codec that you don't have installed on your PC. Download VLC player and it should be able to play all avi's as it has the codecs built in.

    http://www.videolan.org/vlc/

This player will play almost anything. Alot of us on Boards use it. Its not the greatest player but it works.

Do you have the correct drivers for your graphics card? If the card is *very* old (i.e. 486/Pentium I), it may not be able to do video overlays, hence no (or very bad) video with any modern program.
Also try getting a newer version of DirectX.
I'd recommend Media Player Classic for playing videos.
And get XviD and/or DivX codecs too.

Tried installing VLC viewer - kept saying there was a problem with some DLL file - cant even run VLC. It is quite possible that my home computer may be riddled with disease. Any advice on this front?

    Run virus scan.
    Run spyware scan.
Run a registry cleaner. Regseeker is good and backups before any deletes are done.

If it's been a long while since you've installed win98 maybe it's time to back up your files, format drive and reinstall. I ran 98 for a long time until I got current PC and every 18 months or so I felt the need to do a fresh install to ensure things ticked over smoothly.
