Getting my iPod to work on the PC

I've mainly used my iPod on my laptop, it connected with no issues, showed up on iTunes and allowed me to transfer files from PC-player...
My laptop has since died and I was hoping to use my desktop, for the time being, for my iPod... when I plug it in it connects ok, shows up in my USB devices and tells me not to disconnect on the screen... it's plugged into the back of the PC too, AFAIK it's a highpowered USB socket and I've had no issue with them before.
However it fails to show up on iTunes and when I try to open it in My Computer (it works as a portable HDD too), it says it can't due to an I/O error, or something... so what's going wrong? The iPod works fine, the USB works fine and the machine is XP Home, SP2 etc. etc.

    Thanks

Haven't been able to try because my laptop's busted and the desktop is the only one in the house at the moment, but I had this problem when I got the iPod first; tried to use it on my PC and it didn't work but had no issues with it on my laptop (with or without a firmware reboot). What's interesting is that while I was away my iPod broke and I got it replaced, so two seperate iPods come up with the same issues, it must be something in the PC.

I think its a common problem with iPods. My Shuffle did this from time to time.

What do you mean by USB drivers? when I try and update the ipod drivers in device manager I'm told it's the latest update; where would I manually find the right ones? Firmware on the iPod is the latest too...

Delete them and let XP reinstall them. They are usually on the XP disk itself. For the USB controller that is.

If you do get your USB driver up to date (might be an idea to check the website of the people who made your computer or motherboard for these) and still have no joy you might try changing the order in which you do the following: plug in iPod, turn on PC, launch iTunes. I find the best order is to turn on the PC, launch iTunes and then plug in the iPod. It can be a little tempramental some times.
