Various lens accessory questions

Was looking into a couple of accessories that I'll be buying during the week.
(Extenders 1.4 & 2.0 )It says that extenders both sigma and canon have to be used on lenses of 2.8 maximum aperature. Does this mean it won't work at all with anything bigger, or just the AF.

(Extension Tubes) I haven't read anywhere about problems with extension tubes ,but I noticed the autofocus went bezerk on one of my sigma lenses.
Because the lense had a very short focus distance it was moving back and forward very fast.
I've ordered the extension tubes ,but I know I'll forget to turn off the autofocus when using the tubes . Anyone know of any problems.

    Thanks in advance.

I've used the Canon 1.4x extender on their 3.5/5.6 100-400mm telephoto lens - I did lose autofocus (and some sharpness and a stop or two of exposure, of course), but there were plenty of situations where that extra reach was worth it.
