Task manager being a tool

Managed to ahem..get myself a few trojans this evening. Got rid of them with Ad-aware, AVG and Spybot. However I think whatever I had has gone and f*cked up task manager for me.
Whenever I try to end a process, I just get an "Access is denied" error. Doing it in safe mode doesn't work either. I have admin rights, so it should work (and did prior to getting the viruses).
I can remove processes that I've started, but I can't end any system or local services processes.

Been googling for an answer, but I've come up short. Anyone have any ideas?

PS: I've tried making a new admin account, but that didn't work either..although stopping processes in the Run->services thing works.

Try using taskkill from the command line to kill the processes in question (assuming you're using windows xp).

Hmm, whenever I run taskkill /? the Dos prompt screen flashes up for a second and then disappears. Same happens for tasklist.

Using a tool called PowerPrompt, and I still get an "Access denied" error. Parameters are correct, as is the PID number.

Bah, I better not have to reformat.
