I've got a pc that's a few years old and can't seem to get sound from it. Do I need a sound card or something? What does this look like in case its there already?

And if I just got speakers and plugged them into the earphone jack, would that work instead?

Well, it's not easy to tell without any pics.
Generally speaking, if the earphone jack is at the BACK of the case, I would say you've everything you need (if the hardware is not faulty, of course).
If it's in the FRONT, there's a small chance that it's not connected to a proper sound card.
Check the OS. If you've windows and it gives you the volume control, I would say you're just fine. Try to plug normal earphones (surely you have some in your house!) and put an audio cd in!

If you have a sound card, you should see something like this: http://www.hardware.windowsreinstall.com/pics/soundcard1.jpg

I mean the silver plate with the 4 holes, the rest of the card will be in the case :)

No I don't have anything like that, and the earphones jack is in the front of the unit where the cd drive is.

You will need to install a sound card, they arent expensive. You should be able to pick one up from €10-15 euro in most computer shops.

Look in the sticky for where to buy card. Elara or marx computers are probably the best bet for cheap, esp. if you're in Dublin.

I got it to work by connecting speakers to the jack. Thanks
