Yes there are quite a few model jet pilots here.
I have a few EDF jets myself for example.
But I think you are referring to kerosene turbines?
If it is turbines - there are still plenty flying here - only the guys who pay that much for a model can also afford to have private runways to fly them from. So you don't see that many except at a "fly-in".

The World Jet Masters next year is being held in Northern Ireland by the way. There will be jets from all over the world flying there.

    Beautiful model that was too.

A lot of "real" pilots who fly "real" plans fly RC models too.
And they are often into turbines.

Me - I prefer EDF (electric ducted fan) as it's more easy to use, with fewer safety and cost issues.

    But turbines rock !

If you are interested in jets but can't afford turbines (99% of us ! ) try reading up on pulse jers.

A tuned pipe, a sparkplug, tubing and a reed valve.

If you have a lathe a pulse jet might cost 50 euro in materials.

A mate of mine has a Turbine chopper.... The engine alone is over 2500 sterling. You know when this machine starts to fire up......:D

Talking about choppers, any one heading of the 3d master in Northampton this year. Booked my tickets and accommodation for it last week, reckon it will be class to see the top guys fly. Curtis Youngblood will be a judge this year. Will bring back some video footage......

I'd shudder to think of the plane you'd buy for 7, 500! Most half decent 40 year old planes still make anything around 30 grand.

And most half decent 40 year old planes probably have alot of relatively new parts....

40 year old planes are pretty much antiques at that stage.

Have you ever had anything to do with aviation, seriously? The majority of private light aircraft in Ireland are between 20-40 years old. They're all in perfect working order, and have to pass their CofA on a regular basis. The Cessna C172 is a 50 year old design. Park a new one next to an original, and you'll be hard pressed to notice the different. And with the correct maintenance, you'll see 40 year old planes flying in another 40 years. Look at the Spitfire ... the one in the Irish Aircore is still flying, and everyone who's been lucky enough to have the controls has sworn it's as sweet today as it would have been back then.

I don't mean to put you down Plug, but Aviation is steeped with perfect old planes that no one would consider an antique. I'd personally love an old Piper Cub with marine floats, but that's my quirky preference :D

    No...closest thing was a *cough*model glider*cough*:D
I didn't think airplanes could be that dear, do you ever watch discovery wings, I often heard of people stretching there budget of 30000 pounds to buy a kit plane:confused: I see little airplanes flying around KK all the time and they don't look like they could be worth E30000.

Ah - but if you make a 1:10th scale model you get it for 1:100th the cost.

The important thing about models is we get to play with seriously hot machines for a tiddly price.

Ever wonder what a full size T-Maxx would cost you - even to hire it for an hour? :p
Your monster truck is the best value ever and you don't know it !

Get yer ass back up, flying is probably the best hobby a guy can have. I dabbled in models before going for the larger variety, and now I fly a Grob 115. Even if you only go for 2 or 3 hours and stop, it's still great fun.

Did you really pay one thousand six hundred euros for it?

Full size dragster engines use methanol as fuel too.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 446 ✭✭syl77

I intent to ned, with the money I have pumped into the models, I would have paid for my licence by now...
But your right...its a class feeling being up there.....its a drug like no other.

An answer to one of your first questions,if you go to www.kestrelsmfc.co.uk they are a club in Northern Ireland who have an excellent run down on JWM2007 with pilots from the north and their jets.
