does anyone know if its possible to send an audio signal over a LAN. not just accessing files over the lan but actually send the audio and have the other pc pick it up and play it back as if it was a microphone etc ?

If you want to have a kind of netradio, Icecast server is the solution.
If you need just to speak to others through your mic, there're many programs which do this (try for example teamspeak).

    Hope I answer your question.
