Ive decided that I might pick up the guitar, ive looked on waltons.ie, I was going to get a guitar their about a year ago, but never got around to it. Id like to go for an acoustic, and have no idea what kind of price range that I should go for. Bare in mind that I have never played an instrument before, and may not stick with it, although I think I will, so I want something that is good enough for a total rookie with out being to pricey. Could I get any recommendations?

And then I need to learn ofcourse (there's always a catch) I dont fancy lessons, i just have a thing with coaches, I seem to hate them all, so could any body recommend a 'Learn to play yourself' book or something?

    Any help appreciated

    Thanks

BTW, for buying a guitar, I would prefer go out of Waltons, I wont go off some website ;)

Waltons stock primarily SX Acoustic Guitars which, barring the Dreadnought (really wide bodied) models aren't great value for money. They have one or two Epiphones as well but they're specialised country music guitars. I'd advise going for a Yamaha somewhere like Musicians Inc.

You'd prolly be better off getting a 'spanish' (i.e. nylon string guitar) if you've never played an instrument before. Nylon strings will be an awful lot easier on your fingers when you're starting off and the lower-end models are generally cheaper than steel strings as well.

In relation to starting off, get yourself a chord dictionary in conjunction with one of those "I can play that!" books for a band you like (the kind where they list the lyrics with the chord name underneath). That way you'll have more incentive to learn as you'll know the songs already and you'll also get into the habit early on of identifying and looking up chords.
