    Just a query...
When putting a bet on, I usually just go for whatever the current price is, reason being, its usually online and I do be furiously ALT+TAB'ing between paddypower and what Im meant to be doing :)
Just lately im noticing Im missing out on a few quid when backing a horse, reason for me noticing is because after I found this fair forum, my wins have increased ;)

So, short of refreshing the web browser for 5 minutes before betting, what do you look for to gauge whether to wait, place now or go SP?

Well I use Oddschecker.com to find the bookie with best odds. Betfair is probably best to use for UK racing. I usually always take the price of best bookie rather than taking SP at a single bookie.

This is always a toughie. It's generally worth remembering that almost ALL irish sps will drift on the opening show. Also, when there is a small crowd at a meeting the bookies will try to get a few bob into their stachels by lengthening some of their prices. Really the only reason to take a price is if you strongly think that the horse's price will implode, i.e. if it's a big local tip or maybe if you think the horse is genuinely over priced. There was a time when I believed I was a curse as soon as word sifted through to the track that my money was on, the horse's price would drift out to double figures (from odds on)....

    Good luck....
