Poker Forum Charter - Ignore and face a banning

    3. Outbursts of personal abuse/racism/hissy fits/sarcastic jibes/newbie bashing etc. will not be tolerated. These posts will be deleted. Punishment Type - A or B at the Moderator's discretion depending on the severity of the post

This forum in my view has been a vital part of the growing poker interest in Ireland.

Over the last few years this forum has provided various different points of view, knowledge and the ocassional bad beat story. My personal interest with poker has grown from being an avid reader of this forum. I think it is very well run and insightful.

However one apect of this forum is bothering me. I started playing poker with the likes of devore in the thursday freeroll in the fitz. Going back then it was an enjoyable experience and we were all learning. Now though there is far too much bad blood on this forum. I'm not shaming anyone, but there is far too much criticism of a personal nature on this forum.

God if i was a newbie now I would be afraid to open my mouth. There are a lot of respected players on this forum, who do generally give advice or constructive criticism. There is also a lot of unnecessary input recently which is of no help to anyone.

I'm not saying criticism or some mockery isn't called for with some peoples points and statements, but it's getting beyond a joke now.

Even over the last two days, various posts have turned into slagging matches where the original op's question is muddled with all the bitching.

I'd just like to know if anyone else thinks point number 3 of the charter should be enforced more vigourously?

    Mickste

Can you post me up some examples of these?

Poker players are an opinionated bunch at the best of times. Disagreements will often happen and even if the arguments get a bit heated as long as they don't get outright abusive they will likely be let go.
You'd be surprised at how few pms and reported posts I get (dunno about other mods) about bad behaviour and so on. Most are 'This needs to be moved to tourney forum/BB sticky'.

Another thing is that alot of people who post here know each other in real life, and therefore the banter from across the table in the Fitz spreads here. To new people this may seems as nasty/sarky jibes when it's really just 2 people having a laugh.

There's very few bannings in the poker forum given its size compared to other big forums on boards. This forum has 86,000 posts link, which should put it in the top 10 forums on boards (see the 'Top Statistics' in the first drop down menu). So the ratio of badness is pretty low given it's size.

I'm always happy to ban people though :p Use the report post function or pm a mod if you feel a post isn't abiding the charter!

Specifically i mean some of the posts in the Pokerevent dealer thread and the poker as an income thread.(can o worms).Lafortezza i agree a lot is friendly banter from players that know each other, but personally i feel it going a bit over the top when irregular posters post a thread . Players who aren't known among the community.

Cheers though for your input and answers

but personally i feel it going a bit over the top

personally I look for any opportunity to come over the top. We are all just used to 'smelling weakness' :D

the poker events dealer thread did become a bit cluttered, but once you are willing to skip the clutter its fine. it must be remembered that the clutter, i.e. slagging matches, do give this forum a personal touch which surely has contributed to its success

Meh, its inevitable in any large comminty (which is what this poker forum has become) that people will rub eachother up the wrong way from time to time.

A lot of this has to do with regulars here being hard on new posters but also new posters confusing being opinionated with being arrogant.

I think the moderators here do a much better job than any other poker forum on the net.

I stayed out of the "poker as an income" and "pokerevents" thread because it was getting heated in both and I felt the threads were just going around in circles.

I hope that the aggro and flaming that has crept in recently (and where the hell did it come from?) doesnt become the norm. I used to post a lot on RGP, 2+2 and thehendonmob but quit posting on all them forums because of the rows that break out once anyone disagrees with anyone else. The thing I really like about the poker forum here is that firstly there are some very good posters who I feel have a lot to offer, secondly debate over various strategy/hand analysis/ general poker can happen without it getting personal. E.g. there are players who opinions and play I respect that post here, I can disagree openly with their opinion without it turning into a personal row, I really hope this doesnt change.

I also think the mods do a good job on the forum.

I was spending far too much of my time on poker forums last year, so now I only check here and 2+2 HSNL. I think this is a really good forum, poker or otherwise. Theres some posters who are incredibly good for poker theory (bozzer especially but he hardly every posts), a good(ish) general standard and a generally friendly atmostphere. I think there always will be some disagreements, and some of my favourite threads are the ones with loads of screaming. The fact is that there is such a huge gulf in understanding between people who are relatitvely new and more experienced players that there is going to be unavoidable friction.

I think it behooves the more experienced players (and those who consider themselves more experienced) to act a little better then they have. There has been a lot of high-handed too-cool-for-skooolness around lately.

The inverse applies to newcomers too, I learned a HUGE HUGE amount from people like Ray from the Fitz (is that The Ace Face btw?), Macker, Luke, Peter Roche, Padraig, Scott, Christy, Paddy and many others. Not just about poker but about ettiquette at the table, how to deal with the beats, what the scene was like before and of course, about poker. I'm still learning and I still appreciate all of the wisdom dispensed.

If they had displayed the sneering attitude of some people here (people who don't have any reason to sneer at all it should be added), I wouldnt have returned. If I had adopted the "I already know it all" attitude of others here, I'd be a lot worse off then I am both as a player and as a person imho.

I've crossed swords with the likes of HJ and thoroughly enjoyed those "debates". I've learned more from vigourously defending a position only have his equally vigourous attacks on that position find chinks and weaknesses therein. If anyone remembers the early days of the forum they will remember such threads. We still manage to sit and chat over coffee and greet each other warmly in the card rooms! I'm grateful for having those people to test my wits against, even more so when I'm wrong because you learn nothing if you believe you are always right.

The truth is, we're *all* f*ckin' novices at this game, some are just a chapter ahead in the instruction manual.

I have only been posting a short time but have been reading boards well over a year and as an observer can safely tell you that you are never anything but constructive and Courteous.

I should also add that you've got a famous fan in jesse may. I was having a smoke at the city west last thursday and myself and a friend were started chatting with jesse may. Jesse asked my friend his name( similar enough to your own) his response was wow are you mrpillowtalk. He said he reads boards and the posters blogs every day and that's its the by far the best forum out there

    mickste,
The couple of threads you mentioned have been as wild as it gets here.
Even at its worst, its still more civil than most forums on the net (credit to DV)
Some of the long-term posters can be rude, opinionated and gruff, they are also all extremely helpful and knowledgeable. They don't sugr-coat it, it's all tough love.
You say that a 'newbie would be afraid to open his mouth'. As a guy who was a newbie 10 months ago, i'd refute that to the nth degree.

the past week or two have been mental around here, but it makes for good entertainment!!!!
I think the fragility of one's ego can be measured in their tendency to take offense and get catty.

My only gripe is that I feel left out of all this handbag stuff. The odd derogatory comment towards me would make me feel more involved!!!

Your brain's so minute, jtsuited, that if a hungry cannibal cracked your head open, there wouldn't be enough to cover a small water biscuit.

heheh. I'm locking this thread soon but just wanted to say I think MR P-T adds considerably to this forum and certainly wasnt in my thoughts when writing this. (Please everyone don't start asking me individually lol).

Mr May has on several occasions told me that he reads boards poker forum avidly and thinks not only is it a good source of discussion but also a howl. He's extremely positive about Irish poker and also one of the most approachable people I've met on my trips. A real gent and as funny as fnck on and off mic. (microphone, not ste).
