So I've decided I want to clean a bit of the gunk off my fretboard.
Is there anything I can use around the house that will help, or any techniques you can recommend?
I know there's probably a bottle of stuff I can buy that costs €25 and does a wonderful job, but I don't really want to fork out for it.

Lemon oil is the business. Use a flat tooth brush and a cloth too but don't be too rough.

probably best to use a lint free cloth too, you don't want cloth fibres sticking in the fretwire.

But for the love of god, don't use steel wire unless you know what you're doing :p

Really? I better go rub muck in my scallops then. :p

    Cheers!
I'd have to go into a music shop for that though, right?
I don't think I'll be going into town any time soon, so was kind of looking for something else I could use. A toothbrush and water maybe?

I don't see what seafood has to do with this ;)

I have used mild furniture polish on my fretboard before that I found in the garage, it worked well.

I actually reread the oul' scalloping thread there, so much hilarity...

and scallops make great picks for playing faster. :p

Don't use furniture polish! Contains silicon. Lighter fluid can be used but lemon oil is best. Unless it's maple... Spit can be used too.

Hey feylya, sticky the Scalloping thread, for humour references. :p

Toothbrush, fingernail, edge of plectrum, little bit of soapy water will all work fine. Just go gently and dont let anything soak into the neck (except lemon oil on rosewood fingerboard.) For severe gunk, sparingly use some metholated spirits or similar (lighter fluid?). Cant go wrong with spit.
I think the key thing is be gentle and careful.
