I want to try out longer exposures - both day and night - on my camera, especially when I'm in the US. The desert around the Grand Canyon will be an absolutely perfect place to get shots of the milky way, as well as that we'll be taking a few days trip up the Pacific Coast Highway, time-permitting.

Uhm, so I'm in the market for a shutter release. What should I be looking for?

I've been looking for one as well. I think I'll go for an ordinary one with a wire. Reason being that the sensor for the wireless shutter release is on the front of the camera... so a wireless shutter release would only be good for self-portraits I think as you need to be in front of the camera. Has anyone experience with this?

I've got the standard cable one and it works on my old slr camera aswell.
It's grand for just about everything ,I'd say the wireless remote would be good if you wanted to leave your camera on it's own and wait for a fox or a squirrel to walk up right beside it.

EDIT : Wired remote i have is RS60-E3, it a little over 30 euro high street.

I have the RC1 wireless remote (Link)
I find it brilliant, you can use it while standing behind the camera and just point it downwards towards the little sensor thingy, its tiny and has a 2 second delay The 2-second delay locks up the mirror when you hit the shutter button and then trips the shutter 2 seconds later, so your long exposures would be sorted!

It was about €18 on ebay.

Sounds great, but just remember that stars begin to leave trails very quickly.

If anyone is handy with electronics, I got a guy to make a shutter release cable for my 300D. Never had any problems with it and I use it a fair bit.

I have this too. Be careful and dont get the numbers confused, first time round I was sent the RC5, which to be honest is crap! Anyway I bought the RC1 on ebay recently for €6 excluding postage. Only prob I have with it was the even though it was new the vendor sold it with batteries already in the unit so when it arrived it didnt work. Took a few minutes before I 'clicked' what the problem was... its prob cos im a girl ;)
anyway point being, its great, BUY THAT ONE :) but MOST of all enjoy your hols!!!!!!
