Are you trying to do that from this page?:
    http://java.com/en/download/manual.jsp

I'm using FireFox 1.0.8 in Linux and it seems to be fine. Maybe you need to update your version of Firefox? If you've got a Windows machine then alternatively you could just try and use IE to install the runtime.

I downloaded this version of FF yesterday so its the newest. I just tried it with IE and it worked. This is the second time this has happened in 2 days :(, whats up with FF?

Try this page. Choose the offline installation file. I just did this yesterday on a fresh install of Windows and FF. Ran installation as normal and worked out of the box so to speak.

Works fine for me too.... Firefox will block online software installs unless you tell it not to. A new bar will appear under the other toolbars to alert you to this - is that happening? Shouldn't happen with the offline install and it's probably better to do that anyway in case you need a reinstall later.

PS: How do you have your download options configured in FireFox? ie Tools -> Options -> Downloads tab ... Do you have it set to prompt for a download location and to show the download manager, so you can see what is happening?
