Has it been announced whether or not the World Cup matches will be shown in widescreen on RTE?

I presume it will be W/S on BBC and ITV seeing as they will have HD coverage too.

The last World Cup wasn't in widescreen IIRC.

    ITV have HD coverage?

i am assuming that RTÉ will have w/s coverage seeing as BBC and ITV will so it is available

No ITV HD service. The BBC one is only a trial.

HD, Digital and WS are all actually separate issues. Unrelated. Except that HD usually is Digital and WS. (But 4:3 Analog HDTV has existed years ago).

UK TV Gold 2 (UKTV G2) are also covering some additional matches, which I would imagine will be available in WS.

ITV will be showing the World Cup in HD, just not via Sky. My mistake.

ITV will have a HD serivce for the World Cup on Telewest Cable for customers who have their HD TVDrive set top box, there is also a HD trial on Freeview for about 500 people in the London area, the ITV HD service is not available on the Sky platfrom at the moment.

Hmmm, Telewest first with a HD PVR too, be good when they have debugged it.

Thanks for the info. I'm not sure how widespread eveon on Telewest's network HD actually is either.

I think the Telewest HD service is only in 2 areas at the moment.

Hmm, it'll be interesting to see if UKTV G2 will show the matches in widescreen, or just 14:9 like the way they show many of the BBC programmes which were originally widescreen.

Personally, I very much doubt if G2 will be widescreen, but hope I'm wrong!

ITV are part of a joint HD DTT trial in London, sharing alongside Channel 4 (and maybe Five) on E27 from Crystal Palace. The BBC are on E31. As already stated, Telewest are also participating in the trials via cable.

I'd have my doubts that UKTV G2 will show the matches in 16:9 - they don't do it for any other such material.

Their playout kit is completely uncapable of it, as a start.

I thought BBC, Sky or ITV will have to do with whatever pictures and format they receive from the company that is supplying the match transmissions.

    Just a thought?

Make that -was-, they apparently played out their "intro to the world cup" in HD.

Must have got new kit. Wonder will they actually do a WS channel full time? Probably not...

A bit confused. Are you saying that UKTV G2 has broadcast in High Definition? Or do you mean it was in widescreen?

    Think he just means W/S.

Saw it a repeat of the Germany game on UKTV G2 last night, it was widescreen, but it looked much much better on BBC.

Yes, I stand corrected. The coverage on UKtv G2 is in widescreen at the moment for the England v Paraguay game.

It's possibly the first time any broadcasts by UKtv network has been in widescreen.

now if only they broadcast other UKTV channels in widescreen

Considering that UKTV is more of less a repeat network of BBC programmes, and that nearly all BBC programmes since 2000 have been made in widescreen, you'd think it would be the case now.

    Something of possible interest:
UKTV G2 will screen 31 games, including England's opening tie against Paraguay, using the BBC's coverage but with its own commentators and presenters.

The channel, owned by BBC Worldwide and Telewest, has also agreed with ITV that it can show highlights of all 64 games.

Mainstream channels which own rights to "listed" sports events must offer licences to digital channels under law.
