    Hi everyone,

Looking into a trip to Japan for 4 weeks, plan to visit the main cities but also get out into the rural areas aswell. No specific itenary yet. My question is how much money would this realistically need? Staying in cheap Ryokans of course but want to see as much as possible. Thanks

First get a Japan Rail Pass, try the Japan Railways website http://www.japanrail.com/index.html
This will get you on the trains in Japan much cheaper than having to buy tickets for each trip.
Tokyo is not much dearer than Dunlin, London or NY to visit. If you are on your own Business Hotels should be fine, tiny rooms but not too expensive and there are loads of them.
Food a drink not much dearer than the other cities above either, just shop around
For example in Tokyo Shinjuko it's cheaper to eat and drink than in Roopongi cos Shinjuko is where the Japanese go out , Roopongi is where the internationals and tourists go out, and there is not much difference between the two areas.

The rest of Japan should be cheaper than Tokyo.
Try going to Hiroshima, for A-Bomb history of course and it’s a really lively town too.
Koyoto is also very nice, it was the old capital and has loads of old temples etc.

The Mt Fiji is also very nice and there are day trips that go from Tokyo, you might not be able to see Mt Fiji this time of year with the haze but the area is beautiful.

Bring the Lonely Planet, it has all the answers

Cheers Benedict. Yeah i looked into the JR pass, seems like a good investment so will probably go for that. Got my flights this morning in Trailfinders and got a bargain so rearing to go now. I'm planning on having a budget of 50 euro per day for everything including accomadation (i know it will be higher in Tokyo and other cities but hopefully can spend less than this in rural areas). You have any idea if this will be enough?

Capsule hotels run at about 20-30e a night, and are actually pretty comfortable. Many have great public baths (sento), TV/internet rooms etc.

A word of warning regarding money - Japan is very much a cash country. ATMs close by 9pm on weekdays, and earlier on weekends, and many wont accept foreign cards. You should be able to withdraw from post office ATMs no problem.

I would say that Japan is probably cheaper than Dublin with regards to things like food, drink etc, but not by much. Portions tend also to be smaller!
