Long Filename copying issue

I am having intermittant issues with a Mac on my PC network. When copying data to a share on the file server it 'occasionally' says 'You cannot copy the item 'Long filename' because the name is too long or includes characters that the disk cannot display.' Yet when I do it via PC to file server with the same filename it works fine. Help would be great appreciated.

Vague I know but hasnt this got something to do with the file systems on the hds and an incompatiblity between the widows ones and the apple ones?

I wouldn't be 100% sure, as it is intermittant, it could very well be.

I am just baffled, as it happens sometimes and not others. It can be copying away quite happily to itself then decide to stop. And throw up the error.

I found this before when attempting to copy from a mac to an external hd which was FAT32 I think.

Did you manage to find a fix, or did you have to format via Mac OS?

Were there any "odd" characters in the filename? If so, that's the problem. If not, try using mv or cp in a term.

No, just bog standard characters, the oddest would be an underscore. The same file copies PC to file server no prob.

Sorry, unsure what you mean by mv or cp.
