    Dear MJ Smyth

Thank you for your recent enquiry regarding our recent press announcement.

We use the term ‘free-to-air’ as viewers do not pay a subscription to view us. The BBC and ITV’s decision to broadcast ‘in the clear’ from a different satellite is not something that Five can copy. The satellite coverage now used by the BBC can still reach parts of mainland Europe, and the Republic of Ireland. When we acquire broadcast rights for programmes and films, these are specifically for the UK territory. This is why Five pays BSkyB to encrypt and broadcast our channel via digital satellite.

If there is anything further we can help you with, please do not hesitate to contact us.

Thank you for your interest in Five.

    Yours sincerely

    Ian

You should forward that mail to the MediaGuardian website - they may run with it and get much-needed clarification.

Of course if your service is NOT on Astra 2D, then the Geographic coverage limitation is mythical as it is easy for anyone in Greece, South Italy , Cyprus etc to get a Sky Freesat / FTV card but nearly impossible to get Astra 2D reception.

The reality is that Five are locked into a contract till at least 2008.

Only positive thing is that they didn't call us "Éire" like Channel 4 did last time I mailed them.

They're on 2B, albeit North beam - their own fault for not getting capacity on 2D when there was still spare (and letting Sky get it). Channel 4 managed to...
