Art on the Move: Hidden Gems from the CIÉ collection

For up to 50 years the CIÉ Art collection remained hidden in CIÉ offices largely unseen by the general public except on rare occasions when individual works would be loaned for exhibitions.

Now the Collection is on national tour and in co-operation with Kerry County Council will be on exhibit at Killarney and Tralee libraries in June and July 2006 respectively.

Some of the finest works in the collection are available for the first time to the public, including real gems such as Connemara by Maurice McGonigal, and a portrait of the poet Patrick Kavanagh by Patrick Swift, Samuel Beckett by Louis le Broquy and important works by mid 20th century Irish artists, Patrick Collins, Norah Mc Guinness, Gerard Dillon & many others.

The exhibition has already been on tour in association with the Lewis Glucksman Gallery at NUI Cork (Nov-Dec 2005)

The CIÉ art collection was acquired mainly in the 1960’s and was co-funded by the Arts Council.

Art on the Move runs from June 6th to June 30th in Killarney and from July 5th to July 29th in Tralee.

Didn't we learn anything from Aer Lingus? Isn't it time someone trawled through the semi-states and got this stuff either permanently transferred to National Museums or sold off?
