[Couldn't find discussion or mention of this from searching. Apologies if it has been discussed.]

"Communication: Wii can communicate with the Internet even when the power is turned off. This WiiConnect24 service delivers a new surprise or game update, even if users do not play with Wii. Users can connect wirelessly using IEEE 802.11b/g, or with a USB 2.0 LAN adaptor. Wii also can communicate wirelessly with Nintendo DS."

Am I the only one concerned about the possible implications*?
Seemingly, there is no “off” unless you pull the plug (Assuming there’s no battery to contend with too).

    * Disabling games intentionally and unintentionally, “surprise” coming from unexpected source, invasive market research, more…?

I assume the dashboard will have an option to switch it off. That thought did occur to me when I first heard it too, but I doubt you'll be forced to use it.

Aye. That's what I'm hoping. However, the general impression I get is that they're really pushing it. So, if an option to disable it is provided it'll be less than obvious, leaving the majority of users with it enabled. Perhaps it'll just dial home the next time a connection is present.

Again, I'm probably paranoid. I just see this as a major concern before considering purchasing. If anyone has more details, I'd be grateful.

Yea I remember thinking at the time if a company like MS announced that feature the conspiracy theorists would have a field day.

Of course the 360 forces you to update sometimes if you want to use live, but at least you're informed beforehand and if you really want.

I think they're selling it as a feature that means you can turn on your game and get a pleasant surprise as you discover a new character or level or whatever, which might be nicer than having to go to marketplace and download things yourself. So I can see where they're coming from, but there's certainly other possibilities. I'd be amazed if there's no option to switch it off though. In my case it's not an issue because I switch off my modem every night anyway :)

It's only auto-download, not auto-install AFAIK so you have to okay the download to install.

Also it's probably a safe assumption only Nintendo servers can connect to your Wii.
