How many of you use Windows Vista?

Of course I am only talking about the Beta version. I triend it myself and I didn't see a big difference so I carried on using XP.

Has there been any noticable updates in the newer Beta versions?

I would look on Microsoft but it is there product so obviously they will say it is good, I am looking for peoples opinions.

It's beta you cant really make any sort of definitive conclusion on it and using a beta OS as your main OS isn't a terribly good idea (if that's what you meant by going back to XP).

There are a few articles (link) (link) on the beta 2 build you can check out for yourself that cover the various aspects of it.

I have looked at it myself though and found it offer some good improvements over the previous beta and I would have to say I'm looking forward to the final version, but what may appeal to me may not to you of course.

I tried out a 53XX build a while back...want impressed when it gobbled up 700MB of RAM!!!!

From my own usage you'll need a beefy 1GB MINIMUM to get it running with 2GB+ being more preferable!!!!

Also your Graphics card will need to be more capable than just todays integrated graphics to get all the "shiny bits" working properly!!!

Might download it and give it a try, will probably be sticking with XP though even when the final vista release is available.

The RAM usage is dependent on how much RAM you actually have, like a good OS should do

I think he was actually saying that the OS on its own took up 700MB of ram ... and that is not good for any OS

I'd rather my OS use RAM then have it constantly paging out stuff to hard drive to 'conserve memory'.

    Admitidly 700mb is excessive.

Am running vista now and its using 488mb (With Firefox running, and 2 messenger conversations, has Aero and Sidebar on etc. I have 1.25GB of RAM)

Thats not impressive by any means either but still....

Will probably go back to XP on account of my wireless card not working, but apart from that and a few performance issues, its quite nice I think.

Certainly not a huge step up from XP though. Nothing in particular stands out as massively impressive, theres lots of little small things that are nice.

I'd prefer my software to utilise whatever hardware it can to improve user experience. You have to imagine in Vista's case that it will page different things to virtual memory depending on how much RAM is installed. They probably have an algorithm to determine whats the optimum amount of memory to use for OS and whats best to leave to the applications. The page cache can be gigabytes at a time. If you think about it really though, the OS is what determines how much memory your applications get, so in reality the OS takes up 100% of memory all the time, and deals it out to different apps/services as needed.

How much memory must a OS consume before someone puts up his hand and suggests maybe this OS is badly written? (ps allocating memory space is not the same as being resident in memory, I don't know why you are suggesting that?)
