renting apartments in New york

A group of mates and myself are after booking a trip to new york for dec 30th, after checking hotels most are in the region of 100 dollars each for a night. We have looked into renting apartments found suitable ones which will be around 250 each for whole trip, the question is has anybody here ever done this, with regards to payments, key delivery etc.

any advice will be appreciated

Massive apartment. I think there was a receptionist or a doorman who had the key. I'd recommend it. I presume we paid by credit card. Apartments in NY are not like in Ireland - they tend to be more like hotels without the staff.
