Hey all. I have an interview with a large betting company next week and I'll need to be familiar with all the different types of bets involved in racing. Yankees, Heinz etc and how trifectas work etc.
Can anyone recommend a web site or somewhere where I can find out this information. It would be greatly appreciated.
    Cheers

There's a help section on the Paddy Power website which should have everything you need. If not google bet types and if there is still anything you don't understand come back and ask.

Is the job as a cashier or is it something that requires more in depth knowledge of the industry?

This is quite a good page on the BBC site. Should cover everything you'll need

It's not as a cashier but it does involve some customer service so I will need to know my stuff. Cheers

What I meant was do you need to know about how odds are derived, how books are managed etc. or will knowing the type of bets etc. be sufficient.

It would probably do you no harm to know about rule 4's, non runners, place terms, dead heats etc, these are the type that would be very useful if the job involved customer service as a lot of customers don't fully understand them, I've seen many an irate customer who doesn't understand why he doesn't get paid on 4th place in a 16 runner maiden or customers who think they are being ripped off when the favourite is withdrawn just before the off in a race and see a big deduction from their winning bet.

I had an interview once for a betting company. One thing they made me do was an exercise on a sheet to convert fraction odds to decimal odds and vice-versa.

Hey fade2black, this is a good site thanks. Looking for a bit more detail on the bets. EG They explain a heinz bet saying, "like its name, it covers 57 bets..." I need to know the workings of those 57 bets, if u understand where I'm coming from. It would be greatly appreciated. I got the job by the way !!!

Hello An Gaiscíoch. This link gives a fairly comprehensive explanation of all bets: http://williamhill-lang.custhelp.com/cgi-bin/williamhill_lang.cfg/php/enduser/std_adp.php?p_faqid=1066&channel=Sports
You'll soon get the hang of calculating how many doubles, trebles, 4-folds etc. there are in a certain number of selections. I'd appreciate a bit of feedback of the job you're in. I worked as a cashier for a short while but really hated it. Realised when it was too late that I could have aimed for a position in a head office where all the trading and market making goes on. :( Just wondering whether I should go down that road again.

I too am interested in this type of thing. I love gambles and trades. It sounds like a dream job. Why is it so bad?

Please elaborate more Arcadian. Have you had a bad personal experience? From what I saw on the "No Experience Required" episode a couple of months ago, it looked like fun place to work. Plenty of banter and plenty of lads talking sport, what more could a fella want.
