Hay Fever

    This forum will do...

Basically in this thread hay fever sufferers can track which days are good and which are horrible. Also what medication you are using etc.

This week has obviously been awful although it hasn't quite hit the dizzying lows of last year yet. I got the injection a few weeks back but it never seems to do any good.

    How's everyone else getting on?

I have been taking clarytn for the last 4/5 weeks, and slowly but surely over the last few days my hayfever has gotten worse.
I have an appointment with the doc for later today for my injection.
I personally find the injection to be good as long as I get the 80mg injection.
Last year I got the 40mg one and had to return for another about a week later.

Pighead got his injection last week and I've been fever free all week thank goodness. Got that old familiar itchy eye for a couple of minutes on Sunday but it seemed to leave me as quickly as it came. So far so good but I wouldn't be 100% confident in Kenalogs ability to last the summer. I'm sure the sniffles are in the post.

I've been in bits for the last few days. Zirtek and Clarityn seem to only work for about 4 hours and I'm afraid to take a second one. It seems as though my hayfever is getting worse every year so maybe it's time to consider the injection.

I'd imagine that the constant scratching of the eyes cannot be good for your vision...

The injection is usaully about €15 quid, but you have to go to a doctor and have him write a prescription, and have him physically inject you, so add that on the price of the injection.
Mine will cost me about €55 quid, but I usually get 10/12 weeks out of it so is worth the money.

My doctor wouldn't give me the injection because she said it's not that safe.

I'm taking Xyzal (I think!) and it's not bad, once it's taken suitably in advance.

A particularly bad day today. The injection was obviously a waste of time so before I go to the chemist...who can recommend me the best rememdy....

In my experience, taking a couple of painkillers dries it up for a while, enough time to have an anti-histamine kick in.

A bullet to the left temple will completely clear it up too.

Boots were giving out a free hayfever survival kit today as well. Eye drops, info and tissues.

So this is pretty much the worse summer of it...but then again I probably said that last year too. Itchty eyes, runny nose, itchy throat (??), sneezing (5 times a go)

Anyone found the ultimate solution yet??

Mine was REALLY bad last weekend. Non-stop sneezing, an unendingly runny nose, sore eyes, itchy ears (which I'm told is a symptom) etc. It's cleared up a bit right now though.

    We'd be so attractive ;).

The guy sitting next to me on the bus last Friday morning was CLEARLY regretting his decision after about 10 seconds!

It must be one of the worst summers in a good while.... I recently got a mild dose of it on the weekend, but I haven't had since I did my communion. That was nearly...eh....fifteen or so years ago!

I suffer very little from it, but my six year old gets it bad. Last year was the first time she got it, and she has it for the last three weeks. I give her Zirtek as per the chemists recommendation and it just about controls it - mornings are pretty snotty..

My hayfever got so bad today, my back-up doctor (my dad) gave me the injection.

Has anyone had any side effects with this? I got it in my hip and it's kind of aching now  . My dad isn't taking any notice of my moaning though, so I assume it's not serious...

I've been tormented with it all summer now too. Zirtek is what I use and it is very good imo. (When I think to take it!)

Hey. I'm not one to be into alternative medicine but I found aromatherapy to be brilliant! Basically put one drop of lemon oil and one drop of chamomile oil on a tissue and inhale. You could also safely take a drop of lemon oil mixed in with some warm honey water and gulp back. Organic honey with some pollen in it is benefitial too as the pollen in the honey conteracts the reaction.

Whilst in France, I also picked up some brillaint medicine for hayfever. Can't remember the name unfortunately but it was the medicine I've tried.

When one has hayfever, they'll try anything! :D

I find that Luffa complex (available in most healthfood stores, get the Bioforce brand) works really really well for me. It's almost instant relief. (I use the drops that you put in water, but you have to hold it in your mouth for at least 2 mins to be effective).

Geesh, I'll try that. Those tintures are always quite effective. I regulary use Echinacia during winter. Thanks pet! ;)

    hi guys and gals,

    just saw this thread now.

HF has been the curse of my summers for the last 12/13 years.

when i get it bad, it's not pretty. it drives me cracked.

years ago, i tried everything from zirtek, clarityn, dimotapp, allereze to the injection (depomedrone 80mg) which i got for the first time about 11 years ago.

this worked for the first few years. then i got it again 4 years ago and it wasn't working. then i got another 40mg 2 weeks after that (120mg in total) and nothing. another summer of hell. the doctor who gave it to me couldn't understand it as "you can't grow immune to the steroid"

then 2 years ago, i was having a particularly bad time of it and went to the doctor again (he never gave me the injection, i had to go to another gp for it as he said it can cause everthing from osteoporosis to depression; he subsequently gave me a bit of bollocking for having had it). he gave me neo-clarityn, nasolex (nasal spray) and opticrom (eye drops).

that year, the neo-clarityn didn't work but the nasolex did and more importantly the Opticrom did also.

Opticrom is the best thing i've ever had for the itchy eyes. it has consistently worked over the last 2 years and is cheap and over the counter. (about 8 euro i think for a bottle that lasts about 2 weeks).

also, this year i'm not sneezing half as much so the neo-clarityn must be working. and i'm not growing out of it cause my eyes get extremely bad when i don't take the opticrom eye drops.

in summary, Opticrom eye drops have worked wonders for me. and the neo-clarityn (which is prescription, stronger Clarityn) and nasolex seem to work too.

the opticrom is always in my pocket or by my side and this is coming from someone who had lost all hope as a result of growing immune to countless products.

i presume one should not generally recommend medication to others but since it's over the counter eye drops i'll bend the rules this once :)

My sympathies, man, sounds like you've a rough time of it.

I got the injection a couple of weeks ago (I think it was a pretty light dose though) and I wouldn't say it's worked entirely. I was sneezing a lot for a few days, but that turned out to be a cold. I don't want to get a stronger dose though, because of the side effects. You've made me realise that mine could be way worse!

I know how bad it is when your hayfever gets out of control kraggy. Absolutely nothing works for me, except for depo medrone. Guess I'm lucky there. One thing I'd like to ask anyone replying who has had depo medrone though, or any other corticosteroid I guess, have you had any side effects? I get 2 side effects which are very apparent. First, I had eczema pretty badly when I was younger, only suffer from it slightly now, but following an injection my skin completely heals and becomes very soft. The other impact it has is I get differing spells of unstable emotions. I'll get extremely hyper, or paranoid. Very edgey to the point I cannot stay still. This year it lasted 2 days and was pretty intense. I was told I looked possessed. I've found in previous years it can alter my mood for anything up to 2 weeks after the injection, followed by somewhat of a downer.

    Comments welcome!

Ah hay fever, how I loathe thee! I used to get it quite badly when I was young, then it went away for a good 5 years, and came back last year. That must have been the worst summer of my life. Then this summer I had a horrible two weeks (two weeks which happened to coincide with my Leaving Cert  ), but it has - for the most part - disappeared again. Apart from Zirtec I've never taken anything for it. I don't understand this bloody hay fever.

It seems to have changed symptoms for me now. Very confusing.

I found that my hay fever improved dramatically after I had been eating local honey for a while. It kinda makes sense.

Mine got bad over Easter, but it's okay in Edinburgh. I've just got a bitch of a cold now.

Until I read back over this thread, I'd completely forgotten I got the injection last year!

I've heard that working on the eyes is one of the best ways to stop hay fever. This months issue of Men's Health magazine recommends using an eye wash to get rid of the pollen from your occular organs.

Mines beginning to subside a bit now. I only suffer in the springtime when the tree pollen is about .. hazel, silver birch, basically anything with catkins on it! Once they've flowered I'm OK for the summer, thank god. Sometimes get a slight re occurrence in late summer, September - October, but never found out what it was. Zyrtec and Beconase for me for the 3 or 4 weeks that I suffer.
