    Hi all,

Im trying to add my sisters new laptop to my home wireless network.
I've added its MAC address to the list of allowed machines, and entered the WEP key into the new laptop.

Its saying the signal strength is excellent but it had limited or no connectivity. When I go to repair the connection it says it wont work because it cant be allocated an IP address...

Yet the other laptop and PC on the network are working fine. Any ideas?
    Thank you!

Are you running DHCP or static IP addresses?

What kind of router have you got?

Are there any other machines on the network apart from the working laptop and PC.

Sounds very similar to the problem I had with my network, solution was to assign static IPs to each PC/laptop. Pain in the ass, but what ya gotta do...

    [edit]mine's a linksys router as well[/edit]

Have you entered the SSID (effectively the name of the access point) ?

Well the software that comes with the new laptop is picking up the linksys network and saying the signal is fine, and its telling me the MAC address and IP of the wireless router.. is that what you mean by the SSID?

Its the "renewing your IP address" stage that its not getting past each time.
Its odd because the other two machines are flyin it.

    Is it through XP ?

Can you go onto the router - its address may be 192.168.1.1 and make sure that dhcp has enough addresses in its scope - it usualy has plenty. You could give the offendin laptop a static address - increment the highest address by 1 and se ehow that goes.

Well I did that and it connected fine. Now its stuck on "looking up www.rte.ie" for example. I still have the router set at DHCP. Im gonna change it to static and see what happens.

If I disappear, it didnt work, or I went to bed :)

Disable the MAC address restriction - it's not really all that useful, as anyone that can hack your WEP password (not hard) can also clone a valid MAC address (even people who can't hack your WEP password can clone a MAC address). So remove that particular roadblock and see if matters improve. (For the sake of verifying that everything works, you could even dsable WEP for a few minutes, and see if you can get things working. And when you've done that, set it back up with WPA-PSK, WEP is hardly worth your while).

Are any of the other machines connected wirelessly? If so, are they used 802.11b, and the laptop is using 802.11g? That can cause some problems.
