P4 cooling problem

For the past month or so my P4 3.6 has been running at between 65C and 75C while idling. If I try playing a game or anything it usually ends up turning off the computer. The fan doesnt seem to ever speed up, just this constant slow pace which its always done(ive only had this PC since December). But now that the weather (im blaming it on the heat anyway) has gotten warmer, im coming into real difficulties with it.

    Any advice?

    Sell it:D

But seriously, get some AS5 and try re-seat the HSF.

    Or get a better HSF......

Or see is there any options in the bios to make the CPU fan run faster........

AS5 is a thermal paste and is one of the best available, you will need it for a hot CPU liek a P4 presscot..

A HSF is a heatsink fan, or the CPU "cooler"

The zalman one above is very good but is very large and may not fit in your case......

IS this an OEM system? Dell or hp or................

    Ok thanks dude! Appriciate that

Another quick question, at 65C to 75C is there much damage being done?

The stock P4 coolers are crap to say the least, my system is hitting 85-90c during CSS  . Strange thing is the game still bangs on, and the pc doesnt shutdown, magic i tell you. Gonna be re-doing the sytem tommorow though, dont think i want to try my luck through this summer :S.

65-75 degress is hot for a processer considering the athlon 64 chips run at around 40 degress.......

It would seriously shorten the life of the chip........

    Endurance man, you are crazy:D

Seriously, invest in a proper CPU or something:p

This is just a temporary machine until i get my build started. Just got back from long holiday so havent had time to change out the cooler yet. The temps are fine during winter, just this summer heat thats killing me.
Gonna rebuild it tommorow with new fans ect...

funny i had the same problems with my cpu, however it never shut down on me. i bought a zalman cooler there and installed it yesterday......and usually when you walk up the stairs to my room you could hear what sounded like a train de-railing...now....silence!!!!

    Ahhh!

have bought an artic cooler exhaust fan which im hoping will keep the temp down even more. might invest in a new 120mm fan because the stock one seems to be a little loud now....now that i can actually hear it!!

but my point was...go for the zalman...they are great....very big tho!!
