Sunrise Sunset Settings

    Hey all,

I'm heading off on an overnight sail this weekend and I hope to get some pics of the sun setting and rising the next morning. Just wondering if anyone can offer advice about what settings to use on may camera. I'm very much a "point and shoot" photographer so never venture beyond the auto setting of cam.

I have the Sony DSC-P200 (Manual here). So if anyone can give tips as how best to capture my images I'd appreciate it.

    Many thanks
    R

You need to get lucky as well, I caught a lovely sunset in Galway last night.

Nice, but far far too dark.

Here are some of my sunsets, I agree that alot of the time it can be just luck. I rarely use any set group of settings, just judge the coniditions then and there and hope for the best, seems to work so far. Enjoy the sailing hope you get some good shots and remember to upload them here ;)

I guess in these shots what I mostly did was to focus away from the sun itself, so either on a reflection or an interesting silhouette etc. It is a safer shot then concentrating on the sun itself, in most cases anyway.

    Some pics here.

Didn't get as many opportunities to take pics as I wanted. Kinda hard to find camera, set settings, hold camera steady and take picture while your racing.

Got a few sunset/night shots leading up until 2am. After that conditions got a lil uncomfortable so taking pics was impossible. So missed getting any sunrise pics. :( Which was a pity cos it would have made a lovely pic. Nothing on the horizon but the sun.

Don't think my pics did justice to the views. Tried to take some pics of the almost full moon behind us but my lack of knowledge about what settings to use failed to capture how amazing it was to have the moon light up the sky and boat.

Anyway hope this small sample is enough for you guys. Thanks for the tips.

SimpleViewer requires Macromedia Flash. Get Macromedia Flash. If you have Flash installed, click to view gallery

    Strangely, I have it installed!

Mmm works fine for me. I''ll do a non flash version. It will be here. Give 2 mins for it to appear....

'Tis grand, I think I have it. I just loathe flash photo sites as a rule :p

Some decent shots there, someone posted an amazing fisheye view from a boat right at the water level, I hope to try that myself sometime.

Just to note that the second last pic was taken at 3.50am as sunrise was about to light up sky. Couldn't really capture it and after that things got a bit hectic as the wind came up and we were a lil "busy". But just to show my attempt.

See if your camera has a 'bracket' setting. Some cameras can be set into a mode where they take a number of shots together, the first at what the camera thinks is the right exposure, the second overexposed and the third underexposed. You'd be surprised at how an under- or overexposed shot can make the difference!

In the olden days we used to say that a good exposure was a case of G&B, guess and bracket!
