[post=3562490]This would make a good start[/post]. If you need to learn the absolute basics, try google.

Download a poker client and play at the fake money tables if you are completly new to the game. It will get you used to the structure of the game - how the blinds work etc. It doesn't matter if you lose all your chips quickly as you can just press a button and get more.

I'd agree with the play money approasch for learning the basics, structure, ranking of hands etc. But you can't really get good practice as its all-in on any two cards.

I've actually considered running live classes in the "Basics of Texas Hold'Em" - putting up a notice for complete beginners who wish to learn....

I would merely start by showing the complete basics such as hand rankings, and the actions in a hand...

    Extra-curricular things could be:

Class Trip to Fitz freeroll and perhaps
End of course game by all the students with the winner actually recouping their class fees and more - thus serving as a motivation to learn the most so as to have taken the class at a profit....

Homework could be to read this forum and comment on a particular hand they found interesting for next time.....

While I realise people can learn from other methods - I'd be looking to create a friendly atmosphere of no more than 6 people in a social setting to help remove the intimidating factor of sitting down at a table where you don't know what you're doing... (I seem to do that ALL the time ! :D)

I've spoken to a few people who said they'd be interested in this... Anyone know if there is something similar around, or have any criticisms of my idea?

probably best not to let aodea (anto) see this post! LOL :D this could work in theory, not sure about in practice.
In DIT the socs officers were insistent that we try and provide lessons to people who want to learn how to play poker... its the type of thing that i think SHOULD be made easily available and if possible free of charge, as such a college setting would be ideal. I.e. if next year the weekly game is at 4pm on thursdays, then the tables/chips etc should be upstairs from say 2.30pm for an hour long lesson that people can come to if they want, and if no-one shows you can have a 1euro turbo rebuy crapshoot satalite to the big 5 euro game!!! :p
