    Which processer? Amd or Pentium? Big difference in what? What do you use your current pc for mostly?

    i use a 3.2 htz p4.

    A dual core will offer a definite performance improvement for video encoding over a single core CPU (see some example benchmarks) how much of an improvement is of course down to the type of CPU and it's speed.

    I have one. I was a bit concerned that I'd be sorry. Never going back tbh.

    Rock.

    All you have to do is pick one and pray...

    I bought an X2 3800 (cheap ass), and it's fantastic. So cool. I was coping 80GB of MP3's to an external HDD and burning a DVD at the same time with NO slow down what-so-ever.

    So how many people on the internet know that
    Duel = A fight between two people
    Dual = Two of something
    ?

    To answer the OP, all the benchmarks that I've seen show huge gains in video compression with a dual core chip.

    Does windows take full advantage of the dual core chips in that it manages the resources effectively, spreading the load and thus improving performance?

    Or do applications and games have to be designed to use it properly?

    A bit of both. Windows will happily allow you to run one process on each processor, and will share the load effectively. On the flip side, the software needs to be engineered to take advantage of both cores at once.

    What he said. I'm too tired/hot/sweaty to explain in more detail...

    Ah go on, you know you want to....;)

    Photoshop and Premiere take advantage of the dual cores on my PC.
    However sometimes on certain progs I have to set the affinity to either cpu0 or cpu1 to take advantage.
    Last example I had was trying to receive live BBC HD material, I got a slight preformance gain.
