alright lads, me and the girldfriend are looking to head to either Bratislava or Budapest in September before i go back to college, have any of you got any opionions on both?

i'll be looking to go for about 8 days to one of the cities, but the advantage Bratislava has over budapest is that Vienna is very close (30 miles) and i wouldnt mind hitting Vienne for a day or two during it, and Bratislava is disgracefully cheap too!

But i've read posts on this i've searched on Bratislava and they're saying you'd see it all in one day! is 7/8 days too long in Bratislava, would budapest offer more for the length of time?

    Cheers for the help folks!

    Vinny

I have been to both and i think budapest is the nicer of the two. I would say that a week in either is too much i would travel between a couple of cities. I would go to Krakow if i were you as it a realy nice city with plenty to see around it.

Id say Budapest by a long shot. Once youve seen the castle and the "tourist zone" in Bratislava id turn left at the arch and head for the "hlavna stanica" to get the train to Budapest.

Vienna isn't too far from Budapest either - you could drive it in about three hours, so if you did get bored in Budapest you could go there.

Never been to Brataslava, but I do recommend Budapest.

Aren't there boat trips up the river to Vienna actually in Budapest? half remember coming across something in the tour book.

gonna look in to that crash, cheers, might score me a few points too with herself :D

had a bit of a change of mind when looking it up this mornin, thinkin now of flying into vienna, staying there for 4 nights and then going to bratislava and doing 3 nights at a weekend there. sounds a bit more spread out i think! is vienna worth the 4 nights?

Bratislava is only 40 miles from Vienna,I remember we drove there in about an hour or less.

3days/nights is enough for vienna.I'd avoid Bratislava and do it for a day trip only.
Instead I'd head up to budapest-much nicer!

Lots of nightlife in Vienna within a stones throw of the centre at night, but you will get enough of it in 2 or 3 nights.
You would be better off actually not going to bratislava and splitting your 6 days between Vienna and budapest.

i've been to them all a good few times:

Vienna is great for the architecture (she'll love the schonnbrunn palace or whatever it's called), real nice cakes and a cool vibe. night life isn't great tho & is a good bit more expensive that the other 2 cities.

I love Bratislava. outside of the old town centre it's a complete hole consisting of europes largest concil estate but don't let that put ya off. old town centre is great. €3 a night accomodation and €4 steak dinners and €2 cocktails! can't go wrong. grat nightlife too, loads of fancy bars.

Budapest is savage as well. What you'd wanna be getting up to here is bringing herself to one of the thermal baths & spend a day there. then spend some time on margerit island.

i did that boat trip as well. takes longer than a train but is nice. to travel along the danube

ha ha cheers for the perspective, sure we all know its not about me havin fun its about herself! :D:D

i might do the aul fly in to vienna, stay 3 nights, train to bratislava, stay 2 nights there, and then budapest for 3 nights... really want to experience the sheer cheapness of bratislava while i get a chance!

will it end up costin me an arm and a leg though?

by the way, any other suggestions are appreciated and thanks for the comments so far, they've all been really helpful!

Food is cheapish in Bratislava but drink is certainly cheap. Stick to Slivovice PlumBrandy or Zlatý Bažant(Beer) and you wont go wrong. Avoid Guinness, its expensive and not local anyhow and an
ywhere that serves it is going to shaft you , compared to other places to eat.
Actually Id recommend "Alzabetka" resturaunt which is at the end of "Obchodna Ulica" thats shop street in english it has a McDonalds(I know) halfway down on right side ,if you go too far you will end up at an embassy!. You cant miss it, really nice cheap food and perfect service. Its near the token tourist zone. Just ask.
Accomodation is not so cheap, recommend Hotel Tatra down near Presidental palace, has amusing cable tv hahaha... Its free too.

Enjoy, but go to Budapest, its a lot more to do and fun.;..
