Boston is a nice enough city. You should have no problem with accommodation, most American universities have student villages with dorms for rent. Not sure about Boston University, but my brother went to Boston College, which is a very different place. One thing I found about Boston, is you really need a car to get around, so if you're on a provisional then it would be worth getting your full licence before you head out there.

Boston itself is fantastic. Really nice city and theres a nice Irish contingent over there already. You'll have a ball! :D

    Hi,

no its not the International Mgt Masters. I would be doing undergraduate courses the same as ordinary students. Its all up in the air at the moment but Im about 85% sure that I'll get in.

As regards driving license, I cant drive and theres no way I could organize a full license before September. The queue for the test is something like 40 weeks anyway. But I suppose I'll get by, seeing as Im getting by in Dublin, which has a crap public transport system.

Anybody any experience of dorms? I'll be 21 when I get there but I dont want to be the oldest there cos I think its mainly Freshers who end up in Dorms. And I dont want to be the only one who can legally buy drinks cos that could turn out messy.

As regards Irish, Im not too pushed. I know theres a big enough Irish population over there but I dont want to travel all the way to America just to hang around with Irish. So I hope to meet people from lots of different countries.

    Thanks for your help.

I did my Intra in Boston. Absolutely fantastic city. If I could get the visa I'd be back there tomorrow. If I remember correctly, BU is on the green T line, so the best place for you to live would probably be around Alliston-Brighton. Lot of students living around that area actually, a good spot for going out. I'm fairly sure I'm thinking of the right university, although there are about 20 different colleges/universities in the area so you might want to check it out on a map to be sure.

I couldn't disagree more actually. They've got a great public transport system, very reasonably priced. If you live near a T station, you can get pretty much where ever you want to go relatively easily. And a car is completely useless if you're near the centre of town. There's absolutely nowhere to park unless you rent your own space somewhere.

Don't worry, they're not really Irish. But if you put on your best Oirish accent, say yes when they ask if you know the O'Reillys from Co. Galway, and tell them some tales from the mother county, you might just blag the occasional free drink.

It;s funny, I'm gonig to DCU through Boston University.

Anyway, I had my car up at BU but only to leave the city. Driving in Boston is the worst! Worse than New Jersey, Manhattan, or Canada.

BU has on campus apartments where sophmores, juniors, and seniors live. Living in an oncampus apartment is really convienient since the B line to always jammed packed with people and stops at every block .

As for the Irish population, that's mostly in the South part of the city, and the pubs are nothing like REAL irish pubs that i've been to here in Dublin.

Boston loves their baseball team, the Red Sox. I've noticed lots of people wearing New York Yankee attire here in Dublin (which I find great because I am from New York). There is a HUGE rivalry between the red sox and the yankees so drunk red sox fans could give you a hard time.

BU is a hard school, but after spending some tim here at DCU it won;t be much of a jump for you I'm sure.

When you go into any bar over there make sure to ask "So how 'bout them Red Sox huh?"

    You'll be grand :)

Id say id be found out quickly! I know nothing about baseball, just glorified rounders isnt it? BU are an absolute joke though. They've already sent me the wrong visa applications (which must be signed by them) twice. So I still cant even make my embassy appointment yet. But i rang them and they said they're not too busy during the summer cos all the j1ers are out of the way.

Im just wondering what the social life is like. Im told its cold from October to March, up to -20 C, so does that affect it? I cant imagine seeing girls in mini-skirts 365 days a year like you do here! Might put a bit of a dampner on it.

Still, cant imagine meeting too many proper Irish students over there so should be able to play the Irish accent card. Hopefully.....;)
