This is not really a problem just curious about it..wonder if any of the experts have an opinion

I have a USB connected film scanner which I use with my laptop(Sony Vaio/XP home).I would have described the scanner as tempramental, i.e needing 2 to maybe 4 or 5 power cycles before it would communicate with the pc properly.Device manager would say that it was working but scanner would show a comm error.
Once synced up it would work faultlessly,no probs at all.

I discovered recently by accident that if my DSL modem(which is connected to the ethernet port) is off the scanner will connect correctly first time every time, then I can switch back on the modem and everything works as it should.

Just struck me as odd

Strange alright, could be to do with a design fault on the MOBO. Perhaps the manufacturers didnt anticipate that people would use the internet and film scanners at the same time:p

Probably just a funny regarding dynamic resource (shared memory/IRQ) allocation.

    On battery or AC?

Are you using a USB hub? What power supplies are provided/used when using each of the devices?

Check www.vaio-link.com or VAIO Update for updates (BIOS, primarily).

USB has a lot of pomise once it gets over these niggles. :D

Try an external USB 1.1 hub for one device or another - pound shops may still have the €2 ones - to see if it's a speed problem

or try swapping the usb cables around

or tryp unplugging the scanner and replugging it in

USB ain't 100% especially with laptops
