Corrupted graphics & hard crashes

    Hi,

Recently (today) my otherwise reliable PC started exhibiting some rather disturbing behaviour.

I moved the mouse to bring it out of standby but the monitor remained off. Rebooting did nothing and I could only get as far as the login screen for XP.

So I threw it into safe mode, and upon getting to the desktop, I was greeted with quite alarming graphical artifacts all over my screen. Kinda like everything was out of whack, black lines, distorted blocks all over every inch of the screen.

I rebooted multiple times in desperation, but the problem only got worse, with the initial boot screens also becoming corrupted in a similar fashion. I have concluded that my graphics card is at fault, its the only thing I can think of that would cause these problems.

I assume the card is overheating or something? The fan seems to be spinning fine (not making odd sounds) and no smoke is rising from the card. Any ideas or is a new card my only option? Latest is, I turned it off for a few hours and then came back to use it. Desktop stuff was fine until I went to play Ghost Recon 3 and hit the options screen causing a crash and graphical artifacts once again. I rebooted immediately and now im here typing this post and it seems fine.

I've tried reinstalling the drivers but it hasnt made a difference, they were fine for weeks before this incident though. Any input anyone may have on this would be much appreciated. Cheers.

    My Spec:
    XP Service Pack 2
    Geforce 6800GT 256 (Forceware 84.52)
    1Gig of 3200 DDRAM
    Pentium IV 3GHZ

Get rivatuner and underclock your GPU.

I had to do that witha 9800Xt until i bought a new PSU powered GPU cooler.

go to safe mode, set res to 800x600 ,16bit, download mobo temp check program from net, set grahics card refresh rate,60mhz max ,for the moment.SWITCH off aa and vsync ,in rivatuner , advanced options display settings.

sounds like your card is overheating,or overclocked, you may be able to underclock it.
